rod and reel combo for kids

I'm looking forward to getting my three year old son out and drowning some worms this summer.  First I need to get him a rod and reel.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a combo that is more kid friendly than others?  Anyone with some personal experience with a setup that was relatively easy for a three year old?  Thanks.

Get something with a Zebco 33 on it. Those things are simple for a little kid to use.

Your classic Zebco is your best bet…I’ve tried the spinning rods and reels and for some reason from about age 3-8 they just look at a reel and it gets tangled…don’t spend a ton of money on it whatever it is it will just end up broken….get something off the clearance rack for $10-$15 for a combo  … heck if you’re fishing off a fishing line tied to a stick works just as good too at that age….

What type of reel do you use most?  Spinning or bait casting?
If bait casting, get a zebco style push button.  He will use the same mechanics/casting motion once he graduates to a bait caster.

If spinning, get him an under spin.  Same casting motion/mechanics as a spinning reel.

I set my little guy up with an Ugly Stick Jr and a cheap under spin reel.  After getting that down, the transition into a spinning reel was smooth.  Just had to make sure he opened the bail.

I'm a spinning reel guy myself, but I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with an "under spin" reel.  I was leaning towards a push button zebco, after all, it's almost a right of passage but I will have to look into what an under spin reel is like.

Here's an "under-spin" and I have to agree with gillgetter. Makes sense that it would be an easier transition to the more traditional spinning reel.

And within a couple months, he'll be doing this all by himself.  He's 3 in this pic.

I agree with this one 100%. My little guy turns 5 next week and has been a little fisherman for 2 years already. These little action figure rods are durable, usually Zebcos, have a good strength line on it and FLOAT! My kids love to fish, but he is only 5 and his attention span is shorter than mine although not much. The "snoopy" rod keeps him a little entertained, they are usually of his/her favorite character so they will be more excited to "use" their fun rod as opposed to using one of your ice rods or a long pole.

Take him/her to the local Walmart and let them pick out there favorite character rod, they will be so excited to pick out there "own" rod, that they will be begging you to go.  Make sure you get them a character bobber also.  The only bad thing about them is is the gears wear out after 20 orso northerns.  Have fun and get the kids involved in the purchase.

I have heard and witnessed many big fish caught by a kid with a "Snoopy" pole.  I remember a friend had a relative up with their kid and they thought he had a northern on and it ended up being an 8lb walleye.  Kinda, makes you look at your expensive gear with a puzzled look on  your face.  Anyway, I just wanted to point out that they make some foam "life jackets" for rods that you might want to look into.  A friend used them with his little guy and they work well.  If there's an accident you can avoid the incessant crying that would follow if the rod sank.

I'm diggn' that underspin deal.  The Boy has trouble keeping the tip down at the bank with a spincaster.  Should've thought of this long ago.  Thanks.
