Roads out west

Obviously the roads are taking a beating.   I've spent a considerable amount of time out in the field this summer.   Many road improvement projects going on and lots of money being spent.    I fear much of it is wasted money because there appears to be a very weak attempt to enforce any kind of weight restrictions.    I spent 3 weeks east of Watford City and never once saw a truck pulled over being weighed and nobody pulled over for speeding or any traffic violation.  I've heard people say nearly all trucks run over loaded.   I don't understand the lack of enforcement?

Also, I witnessed some of the most ridiculous driving and most of it by those dreaded out of state workers.    It is a miracle more people haven't been killed.    I happened upon the latest fatality north of Dickinson on Monday.  Pretty obvious what happened.   Poor judgment used in trying to pass in the fog and met a semi head on.
Rest in peace to the deceased in that one.

OK,  rant over.

To drive on these roads in the thick fog is like trying to kill yourself or someone else. Give anyone a nervous breakdown.

It must suck to be a farmer or rancher out in the patch. I operate a high wheeled sprayer out of Berthold, the farthest west I usually get is south of Palermo. It drives me nuts to be out there, and thats pry not the busiest part of the patch. There is a 35 mph speed limit in Mountrail county, if the sheriffs dept would patrol the road south of Palermo and the gravel road east of Belden, they would make a killing.

I also saw the article about two million,  if I am recalling it correctly it was earmarked for DOT & Law enforcement.  The authorities need more people and the fines need to be steeper.  I noticed a load of 4 1/2" casing leaving Dickinson yesterday,  looked to be 7 rows high,   usually just a little over 4 rows is legal. I didn't notice how many axles.  i thought about following him and calling it in, but my wife would have killed me, taking off during our house move.

here's the other thing that I don't understand.  I live five miles from Williston.  I drive to town everyday.  I'm usually hard pressed to see a ND plate.  Why the hell aren't we making these people register their vehicles here and get licenses in ND.  It's absurd.  There's literally thousands of vehicles of people that live and work here and keep their plates/licenses from where they came from.

The 2 million is for truck inspections ,  I would think they could inspect and weigh a few truck with that.

what they need to do then is build a new scale in williston.  one that they can run 24/7 and doesn't cause accidents like the one they have now.  when they open that scale it screws the traffic up so bad the flow ceases.  it's beyond retarded.  they need to fast track a bypass around williston and get the trucks the hell out of town.  and I mean like yesterday.

We got a email at work about a week ago that they are going to start enforcing anyone living here for a certain amount of time has to have a temporary ND license plate.  I don't know how they plan on enforcing it.  Outside of yesterday, I never see any cops anywhere.

I don't disagree at all, but they don't have to go to the back roads to make a killing.  I get passed every day on hwy 2 by crazy people going 90 mph.  Yesterday, they obviously launched some sort of labor day patrol.  For the first time in a long time, I felt their presence on the road.

I'm with you guys....very frusterated.  I know the local sheriff's departments are understaffed.   They should send some of the McLean country sheriffs guys up here. The Underwood and Washburn areas don't have a patrol problem.  lol

Even opening the one they have once in awhile would be a start at least. How crazy is the southbound lane going by WCCU and grandma sharons? It's so bad I cant help but laugh, those depressions gotta be 4+ inches deep, it's like being on rails.

I dont think there is a speed limit on hwy 2 is there. Free for all and hold it to the nuts. I usually drive  close to 80 in my pickup. The other day i decided to see what a couple of guys were doing and my govener kick in and they were gone 5 minutes later. A camero came buy me the other day and the wind about riped my mirror off. He had to been going 120+. Should be interesting when the roads get icy. Should buy a wrecker for the winter months. Would be very busy.

I brought that up about a week ago.  they'll leave the damn thing for two years probably.  can you imagine what that will be like in the winter time.  plumb full of ice.  the head of the state highway dept. here has to have his head up his azz.  They do open that scale at least twice a week.  guess when?  at five in the afternoon catching all the trucks coming back into town.  and guess what?  that's right, 90% are empty.  and they totally screw up the traffic.  In fact the turning lane to go south onto  85 is 20-40 vehicles deep most of the day.  I just go past and turn around at the next turn into caterpillar and jump on the on ramp going south.  If they even made an attempt at fixing the problem I would sympathize with them.  but there's nothing.  we've been bitching for three years for a stop light there and the state gives us the bird.

I drove from williston to Ray everyday last winter.  I've never seen carnage like that in my life.  It was daily rollovers.  one day there was over thirty cars in the median between willi and ray

I heard the state is making out of staters put their plates on upside down for the winter months so they are easier to read when they have to call them in.  Hahaha
