Yep. On more than one occasion. Shore fishing the Red in some areas can be pretty sketchy. I hate snapping turtles. Cool to watch from a distance though I guess.

When I was about 15 or 16, there was a GIANT snapping turtle in the creek around hazen. We would always catch small walleyes and northerns in there. One of the neighbors snagged this big bastard,  and got it up on shore. The idiots that caught it slammed a fence post through its back and killed it. Was a sad sight. I know this for sure, it was easily bigger than the one in that video that was shown. The game and fish later came and picked it up.

I caught about a 40lb'er out of Larimore Dam a couple years ago.  It's shell was completely covered with green algae like a cement boat ramp gets in the summer.  I thought about killing it and having the shell cleaned as a decoration, but after dealing with the mean SOB for a while I decided to cut the line and let him go.

I caught a big female snapper shorefishing the red once. An even bigger male kept climbing on top while I was trying to bring it out of the water. It took forever to land it due to having no idea when the other turtle would snap at us from underwater. We ended up making Turtle Soup and it was delicious. I still have the shell.

My grandfather used to catch them out of the Little Missouri near Marmarth. He would take them home and nail them to a tree. Then clean them for supper.

I have actually caught two soft shell turtles in the missouri river, at least it could be two different turtles, or the same one considering proximity.  When I was maybe 13 years old I caught one at general sibly park, maybe 15 inches in diameter.  Then almost 10 years later I caught another softshell at the mouth of the cannonball river on a deadstick...30 miles south of the first one.   Odd.

I have had numerous run ins with snapping turtles, but by far the largest one I have ever seen lives in the creek area at Froelich Dam. there is no doubt that he was living in that creek before they constructed the dam.   I don't know how big he is but I have seen him a few times below the boat in shallow water and it looks like the entire bottlom lifts up and moves.   Freeaky   big.

These turtles were humping and floating sideways on top of the red river. They were sitting in backwater screwing away, it was hilarious. I netted them for some reason and took some pictures and let them go, to get back and doing the hibbiddy dibbiddy.  Pretty crazy stuff how they screw floating sideways in the middle of a river....

I grew up 20 miles north of Bismarck along the Missouri River.  My house was about 1/2 mile from the river and found a big ole snapping turtle on my drive way. I thought it odd he was so far away from the water.  There were no other sloughs, ponds or water sitting anywhere. I turned him in the direction of the river and he started through the woods.

 bullheadmaster,

they are much uglier than I remember. Maybe I was just in awe of the one that I saw when i was younger, probably because of its pure huge size. Do they make a hissin' type of noise also? Anyone ever heard or seen this??

had a huge snapper take my line at Sweetbriar lake many years ago that was a little bit bigger than the big softshell in that video...probably 6" wide head, he was taking bluegills in whole with each bite as he slowly moved through the creek.

I snagged a 42lb. snapper in Painted Woods Creek many years ago.  I was standing on top of it, while my Grandpa pulled the hook out.  It just started walking away with me on top of it.  We stuck a good sized stick in front of his mouth, he grabbed onto it and wouldn't let go.  We picked him up this way and threw him in the truck.  We gave him to some friends who were going to clean and eat him.  He broke out and got away from them as well.  They had him in some sort of tank that they kept changing the water in - said it would flush him out and make him so much more tasty.

I have an alligator snapping turtle. It's a neat little turtle, only about 2" right now, and they grow super slow. It eats live fish and nothing else.

Oh yes, they hiss really really bad. Crazy sounds.  These weren't to happy with me. And man O man, I can handle some nasty smells from anything, including myself, but these creatures were the stankiest of stankiest things I've ever smelled.
