All depends on the bottom. I wodl say if it's a sandy  or muddy bottom, use a digger anchor! if it's a hard botttom or something with a few rocks and trees, try a richter anchor, and be sure to let enough line out. Don't just drop it over the side and tie it off. I usually let out about  2 ft of line for every foot of water. I can hold with my richter anchor in some pretty strong current!!! good luck

I just throw two anchors in on the river and at least one will hold.

You will always get some sway on an anchor if you are letting out enough line. Best way to reduce this is use a digging anchor to hold and a river anchor dropped straight down to keep the boat from swinging.

I had the same problem a few years back on LOW and I was using two anchors in some pretty choppy water.  A fellow told me to let out more line.  Line should be double the depth of the water.  I tried it and was able to stabilize with just one anchor.

I made one out a a 24" disc blade bolted to a bull gear out of a junked farm implement of some sort.  Havn't tried the river, but it holds in 3 foot rollers.

I say to hell with that pot o' gold.

Add 3 or more feet of heavy chain to your anchor and tie your rope to that this will help out a bunch trust me

Tie the ancor off the front of your bow. That allows the hull to cut through the current/waves and it reduces the sway. Another ancor helps. A heavy navy ancor works well for the second ancor.

I know adding the chain really helped me out on my anchor here on the missouri.  First time i had the boat out at the tailrace i couldn't get the anchor to hold with all my line out and with another smaller anchor out also.  After I added the chain I haven't had any issues yet.  The chain acts as a cushion for the anchor.  I think mine is an 18lb anchor on my 1600 lund alaskan and i haven't had any issues not holding yet.  To stop side to side you will need two anchors but give the chain trick a try if you still don't get it to work only costs a few bucks and if you look at all the big boats they have a length of chain attached to their anchors.
