Went out for the first time to explore the red........drilled a hole in 6 fow and up came some water. Head alot of cracking to going on.  Something didn't feel right. Was up at MB Johnson Park.......Went down to the North Dam and wow to my suprise, the river is up like several feet. My question is why aren't the proper personnel giving out reports to warn people. All they'd have to do is say that they're releasing additional amounts of water out of Lake Traverse or something. I wouldn't have burned up the time if I had known. They should also let us know in advance.....Am I the only one that wonders about the where the hell is the water coming from or where the hell did it go ? I did see open water in places that didn't make sense....

Who exactly would this proper personnel be? Every government agency I've ever seen issue a statement regarding ice conditions has said that ice is never truly safe and that ice conditions can vary so much that ice that will support a vehicle can't support a human on foot even a short distance away. I think you're kind of on your own to determine if ice is safe or not.

I see open water every day on my way to work and I don't live anywhere near a dam. That being said, unless it's "extension time" on the Red, you should always use extreme caution and even then a person needs to be mindful.

Just chalk it up to a learning experience, trust me I've been there before and I still get the pucker factor every now and then. Wearing a life jacket (I know, I know) using the buddy system (which is usually more fun than fishing by yourself) wearing a rope around your waist attached to a tree on shore, etc, etc, etc, whatever your comfort zone is you should always take the extra effort when dealing with river ice.

Good luck and be safe!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, don't assume the ice is safe because you see snowmobile tracks. Don't let another person's ignorance affect your well being.

Yep, plus a snowmobile can cruise over open water without going under, let alone thin ice.

I see nothing in the below that says the Corps is releasing more water.  What you have most likely just witnessed is the putting on of ice on a river.  As the river ices over, the river stage goes higher to reflect the greater difficulty the water has of traveling at normal speed.  This makes the ice move and contort to reflect the higher stage.

I'm not you, but if I had just written the above I would feel like a tool.
