Reloading Questions

I was just wondering if anyone has had the same issue i have had.  I currently shoot hornady sst's out of my 30-06.  They do shoot very well as i dont have an expensive set up by any means.  Usually about 1.5 inch groups at 200.  Just fine for my hunting situation.  Anyway when reloading i did a bunch of testing and measured every other COL after seating the bullets.  What i found is there was a little bit of difference between them because of the condition of the plastic tip.  Some woud be nicked or slightly flattned i guess.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if its any kind of big deal.    Also what kind of media do you use for tumbling your brass.  I uses the red stuff.  not sure what its called.  i find i have to tap the brass upside down to get the fine powder out after tumbling and i have to wipe them all off.  Is there another kind that doesnt leave the red film on the brass.  Thanks guys.

Regarding damaged tips and COAL.  No big deal.

Get a Hornady Bullet Comparitor set for your calipers, it'll solve much of your COAL woes.  The comparitor measures the ogive instead of the tip and is a much more accurate way to measure COAL.

Corncob floor dri called "Maizesorb" makes good tumbling media without getting the cases full of that red film.  It's cheap too and doesn't stick in the flash holes either.

You could try stainless media it works great if you have a drum type tumbler. I have never used a vibratory tumbler, but I dont think I would like them.

Ive heard it does a great job, but ive also heard it shortens brass life some.

Im rolling with the ultrasonic cleaner. Other than having to dry cases out which is a pain in the arse, it works very well.

You could go from the ultrasonic into a vibratory W/untreated media for just a few minutes and have bone dry shiny inside and out cases.

Here's a video that I found on You Tube.  I have the OAL guage, but not the bullet comparators.  I loaded some 150 grain Nosler Ballistic tip bullets for my 30.06.  They also have the plastic tips, so I just measured the overall length including the tips and not the ogive.  I think this other way would be alot more accurate.
