Made it out finally after a long spring, got to try out the new boat and was able to take a father/daughter duo out fishing. Competition was high as they had a $5 bet on biggest fish! We ended up keeping 13 eyes, fish came from 6-20 feet. Each spot we went had fish at different depths, so watching and trusting the electronics was key. It was not fast and furious by any means.
Van Hook Arm
Van Hook Arm region covers the portion of Lake Sakakawea north of Shell Village Island to Highway 23. Considered by many as the walleye factory of Lake Sakakawea.
It would be a nice day if not for 25 mph wind. Moved from shallow to deeper water along south side of Redo Island. 1 Small perch, 1 4 lb Slough Shark, Snot Rocket, ok Northern Pike... and one smelt (yeah via hook and line) Pike was full of smelt and the smelt wouldn't leave our lines alone. Used minnows, and gulp. Can't wait for Ice out and go smelting.
Just wondering how the ice is looking for bite the ice next weekend
Put in at Van Hook today and fished shell village and Independence point, some fish on shell but the best bite was on Independence point. 15 to 20ft on lindy's with leeches was the best with a few fish on crawlers.
Fishing in the Arm was good - 17fow - off islands and shorelines - spinners were best with worms. Also had luck with spinner and minnow...about 60-40%. Had to move often - usually got a fish right after a move. Very slow fishing south if Van Hook...
Decent day on Sunday at the hook 8-16ft crawlers and whatever you want to throw at em pretty much. Bite was better on Saturday compared to Sunday but sure can't complain as the fishing was easy. Get out there and get a limit if you have time. Water temp was 64ish in the arm. Fish were suspended in alota areas on Sunday. Fishing should just get better by the day if the weather stays ok.
Went to Van Hook area Saturday. Didn't get there until 9:00am. Did well for first hour or so, then it slowed way down. Between 2 of us we ended up with 5 walleye. 55 degree water out on the big water, and around 62 degrees in the bays. Didn't stay for the night bite or i'm guessing we would have had decent odds of filling our limit.
Went to Van hook on friday, fished around Gull island and Horsehead island. The bite was fast in the morning but by 11am it slowed way down. Lots of short bites in the morning. Mostly on jig and minnow, had a few on lindy rig. Water temp around Gull Island was 53 and by 11am it was 56. Fished the NW end in the afternoon and water temp was 63 in the shallows. As I was cleaning fish, I talked to four other fishermen with mixed results, two boats didnt catch anything and then the other guy came in with a limit.
Fished North end of Van Hook this evening. 16" of ice where I was. Fishing was pretty good in ~20' of water.
Fished in Shell bay for a couple of hours this evening. Found 14"+ of ice. Jigged and ran tip's for just a couple of lookers on the flasher.
