Red River (North) - Friday, August 12, 2011
Red is going back down so I took the family out. We used frogs and cut goldeye. Could not get a bite on the Goldeye but the frogs were hopping. My boys landing two nice fish on the photo page of 11 Lbs 2 oz and the other was 9 lbs 4 oz. Then some small fish as well. The frogs were so big that we had a hard time getting a hook in the fish. We misse about 10 fish. Fished slow water in right after corners and the fish were stacked in there. Only had about hour and half so it was a great night.

Red River (North) - Thursday, August 11, 2011
Catfishing on the Red River remains steady as the water falls from yet another high water spell. Fish are being caught off the main channel near the bank. Spots to check are shallow drop offs and cutbanks, snags, or grass flats. Don't be too concerned about depths as the fish are spread out and relating to the current more than how deep the water is. The best bait remains sucker, with goldeye showing some signs of life. Right now might not be a bad time to put some frog in the mix too. The river is falling but still high so be sure to exercise caution in boating and fishing. Safety is still key.
Another option to catfishing the high water on the Red is the Red Lake River. With much less current and flowing at near normal levels this can be a more relaxing option. The fish on the Red Lake are being caught in smaller mid-river holes as well as the edges of deeper holes on the bends. Bigger fish in the 13-16 pound range are showing up as well. Sucker and frog are good bait options for the Red Lake. Remember if you head over to the Red Lake River you will need your Minnesota fishing license and can only fish with one line. |

hey guys, ive been hearing alot about how great the cat fishing is over that area. I am looking to make a camping trip this week, before i start school with a couple of buddies, and was wondering if you guys could help me get some info. Any campgrounds around the fishing areas? where would be some good areas to fish from shore? I have never fished a river for cats and from what ive been told, as well as read, the cats in this river are huge. I'll be making the drive from Minot, and any information would be greatlty appreciated. Thanks once again!

Went out on Sunday night on a grassy lawn, I was about 100 feet from the bank of the river, fishing in about 18" of water with cut goldeye. Caught two cats between 12 and 15 pounds, missed three others. Pretty decent fishing from a lawn chair sitting in the grass.

Fishing on the Red in the Grand Forks area was fair to good this past week. With the high water the fish were really spread out on the river and it took some effort to find and stay on them. Some days you would catch big cats, other days lots of little ones.
The best spots were the shallow drop offs along the banks in 2-10 feet of water. The water could not be to fast or to slow to hold fish. Sucker was the best bait for catching fish but goldeye got more bites and smaller fish. It normally took 10-15 minutes for the fish to find the bait. Most picked at it before hitting and some would just slam it. All in all not a bad bite considering the up and down conditions of the past weeks. There is still lots of debris floating in the channel so be careful when running and anchoring. Both Grand Forks ramps remain open and are in great shape right now. |

Well went out a week ago and caught lots of cats on frogs.... nothing big. Ended up with one 14lbs with a cut goldeye. Now the river is shut down again. Last year at this time it was unreal and now all the high water stinks.

Don't usually post reports, but since I go pretty much every day, I figured I would start sharing. Went out Saturday afternoon, north of Fargo with the intent of just going and catching my own bait. Caught a small frog and threw it out on a bobber just outside some flooded brush. Caught five decent eating size cats in the 2-4 pound range before my frog wasn't really usable anymore and I was too lazy to try and find another one. Small bait= small cats. I'm a sumo hunter :D
I saw numerous other people come out and the only thing I saw anybody catch was one drum on nightcrawler. So live frog is the best bet now. However; I've noticed for night fishing, around the 12a-3a time frame, sucker and golden eye in the channel are working really well for 10-20# cats right now. Even if you aren't fishing a break. |

We went out in the late afternoon yesterday, and we had minimal luck. Fished from shore in northern Fargo.....We tried frozen frogs, and suckers (both whole and cut). I had a few really solid bites, and my friend had two on the hook. We suspect the two he had on to be from 12-18 lbs... They put up a HUGE fight. The first fish went into the debris, and wrapped up the line, and the second one got almost close enough to net, but he had a bur on his swivel that cut the line.. TALK ABOUT BAD LUCK... but... it's nice to see that the big ones were biting, and I may try to go out today. I hear fresh live frogs are the ticket, but nobody around here has any...... I couldn't catch any goldeyes at this spot either.....

been fishing the red lake river out of east grand forks lately and have been doing really good. Far above average weights i normally catch every year on the red lake. Got a nice hole i found and have been catching pigs out of it every time iv been there. Think the red river lost a lot of big fish due to the high river levels? seems like the cats have been hiding out in the slower moving water. Just my opinoin

Was curious if anyone could shed some light on the best places to shore fish for cats this fall? My old man and I are making the trip across the state for this very reason, and would love some input. I fished Drayton a couple years ago around Sept. and absolutely slaughtered them, but if things are slow are there any other good dams?

Red River (North) - Tuesday, July 26, 2011
Catfishing on the Red River is fair right now. The river is nearing flood stage and the fish are spread out but are still biting. The best spots to fish are snag piles that are shallow along the cut banks, drainage notches, or secondary currents near slack water. Suckers are still working well but they are showing a liking for frogs.
The river is high so only people who are very confident in their boating skills should be out right now. Safety is the key here and we want everyone safe. The river looks like it will be falling fast by the weekend and things will go right back to gang buster fishing after that. |

Got a really late start and did not get out until about 11-5, worst time to catch cats I hear but went out anyway. Using Frogs and cut goldeye. Goldeye produced a few fish but the Frogs where the ticket. Boated 9 fish between 10-14Lbs on frogs. I have only been fishing Cats for about a year but I could not believe how they hit the frogs. Everyone darn near ripped the rod out of my hand. Only had about 15 frogs so ran out quickly. Sending the kids out today to get as many as they can. |
