Red River Fishing Reports
Red River (North) - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 | |
I was out last night for about 1 1/2 hours. Mostly suager, after and at dusk. Large minnows on chartrues jigs with a chartruse and white swirl did the trick. No one walleye last night, just saugers, but larger sauger than average.
The bite was at the mouth of the drains and not in the drains as the water has dropped. Not sure if that will help. Yup...it is muddy when it is warm. I was happy to see the ground firm and the mud stiff from the cold last night...not as bad as earlier in the week for mud that way. |

Well, I guess I could use more experience with the old RR of the North. I went down to try catch a big walleye from shore( I was trying to pull a Jig-em-up Josh or Backwater Eddy). I fished just north of Grand Forks where a drain enters the river. I had the guy at Home of Economy pick out some of the smaller sucker minnows they had (4-5 inchers). I proceeded to walk from my pickup to my spot while picking up massive amounts of MUD near the river and my english cocker picked up a record number of burrs in his ears and everywhere else. I fished for a little over an hour(4:15 to 5:30) with a lindy rig tipped with a smaller sucker and never even got a strike to brighten my evening. I worked the current, the slack water, deep, shallow and everything in between.............no luck. Just wondering if all you Red River Rats are still catching fish? I went home with my tail between my legs and an hour of pulling burrs off my dog. Still, it was nice to be outside with a line in the water. |

The walleye are back on the feed and frogs are again very high on the menue. Dusk and after with jigs and frogs have proved best for me. Some big fish around, and a mix of nice sauger.
Slow bumps and pauses along the muddy shallows is the key, in or near creeks and drains. Some action on large crankbaits as well. Large 5" or better shallow shads were the best producers for big walleye. Fish are hungry, weather is nice, get them while you can. Enjoy! |

Well the fish are still biting. Doesn't look like they'll stop either. Yesterday I got on the water at about 9:30, picked up gillgetter (you better not tell anybody about our little spot!) and threw anchor. The fish still aren't that aggressive, gillgetter picked up a couple small sauger, then I nailed a 15.5 inch sauger, we each lost 5 or 6 fish, and I eventually picked up the fattest, I repeat fattest 16.5 inch walleye I have seen in my life.
Gillgetter had to go to work, so I stayed on the river in the boat. I told myself I'd give it another 15 minutes, and pull the plug. I had a great hit 15 minutes later, missed the fish, and decided to go home 1 fish shy of my limit. I tried a few other spots on my way back to the ramp with limited success. One bite out of 3 spots, no fish. I cleaned the fish and checked the bellies as always, and it appears somebody else missed a hit! That walleye had a "twister tail" off of a grub in it's stomache, black with red flakes! Good luck guys. |

Murp.
Yesterday I went out with some buddies on the river in my boat, probably one of the last times this year, ok the 2nd to last time. Fishing was ok. Nothing spectacular. I landed a 20 inch, 18 inch, and 17 inch eye, and also 2 nice fat sauger, one was 15.5 inches, the other was 16.5 inches. Again, many missed hits, and we lost several right at the boat. I found a stretch of river that has 4 sandbars within 75 yards or so, 2 of which are submerged, and we just hit those hard, we'd pick 2 or 3 up in 30-45 minutes, move to a different one, throw anchor, etc. The river is still on the rise, and we found the fish in 5 feet of water, shallower than usual the past couple weeks. |

Bigger walleye are on the prowl on the Red. I have been doing best with large crankbaits in whites and lighter color paterns after dark. Large may be up to 8" for cranks.
Another good producer is 5" swim shads on 3/8 oz jigs, in Black/White, Blue/White, and Pearl. Large slow moving swim shads draw hard hits. Keep close to shore on the first break in slow moving water, it will pay off....especially at dark and after. Sumo Walleye |

The fishing is still good. Fish are still responding well to a slowly retrieved jig. Sandbars, inlets, ROCKS, and timber are going to be your best bets right now. I had to re-stock my jig supply and treble hooks yesterday, for my home-made stinger rigs, due to pike, snags, and normal wear and tear on the line from rocks and logs.
1/4 ounce to 3/8 ounce SHORT SHANK jigs are the way to go. Make sure your arm, shoulder, and wrists are ready to go, lately I've been making maybe a half dozen to a dozen casts before I connect with a fish, and sometimes it's less/more, but you get what I'm saying. 15 minutes of no fish, and after that BE READY. The 20 inchers will let you know you have a bite, the 14-16 inch class don't want you to know they are nibbling on your bait. I took my nephew out yesterday, for 15 minutes (he is 5 years old, and couldn't stand the cold) and he missed 2 fish on a floating jig and 1/2 ounce egg sinker with a fathead hooked through the tail. I went back out after dropping him off with his mom, and caught the same fish that took his bait. How do I know? When I cleaned it, 2 fathead minnows were in the stomache, one with a puncture through the tail. Get out the ice fishing clothes, get out there and catch some fish. I guess one benefit of the longer shank jigs would be that the hook will bend when in a snag, allowing you to bend it back instead of breaking your line with the stronger, shorter shank jigs. Oh and one more thing, do your homework on "sauger", and you will find that they turn on 110% in BAD WEATHER, so "it's too cold out" or "it's snowing/raining" is NOT an excuse! ![]() |

Dakota Kid my best tip is contact and book to stay at "Cas on the Red".
I prefer to stay at "Cats on the Red" and have done so for many, many years now. The spring flooding did raise some havoc on the lodge but it is back up an operational again and will be even better when all planned renovations are completed. They also have a new American Plan if the guests wish to participate in it a gourmet cook comes in, her vi-tills are exceptional! Stu and the gang will keep guests well tuned in to the areas that are on the bite. What I also like is the other fellow guests tend to pitch in and it becomes a team effort and everyone get on fish. Stu has well over 30 years of on the water experience on the Red and the associated river and lake systems, so he's Da-Man as far as I'm concerned. And his guides are top notch if that is a option guests prefer over going it alone. As was mentioned, there are other options in the area too, but my pick is always "Cats on the Red". |

WOW, the walleye and sauger bite is ON! Every other cast yesterday produced a nice walleye or sauger. A friend and I went out in the boat, in 6-8 FOW, tossing jigs and working the bottom back to the boat, 1/4 oz to 1/8 oz jig/stinger combo with a fathead, and also small sucker minnows did good. I experimented with gulp, which worked fine also but they preferred live bait. We caught about 20-25 fish each, anywhere from 12-19 inches. 2 sauger were nice fat 16 inchers. The biggest walleye was 19 inches, follwed by a couple 17-18 inchers.
Good luck guys, get out while we still can! Water temp was 40.8-42 degrees. Warm weather the next few days should keep the bite hot for a while. |

Fished Drayton saturday from 2:30 pm to 11:30 pm, Was targeting cats. Caught about ten, smallest was 8 pounds, largest was 14 pounds. Caught a bunch of small walleyes and sauger in the 12" range, and two walleyes that went just under 7 pounds each. One of the big walleyes was caught on a 6" waterdog and the other on a 5" sucker minnow. Most of the smaller ones were on a chartruse (sp.) gulp twister tail and jig. Suckers and waterdogs were fishing equal for cats and snags were the key.

Sauger/ Walleye bit is still on at Drayton, the numbers have slowed up with the cooler weather but the size has increased accordingly. Twistertails on jigs, also works tipped with minnows.

I am new to the whole fishing world, but I would just like some tips on different areas on the Red to fish. I usually go to Wahpeton every weekend and get some nice sized Cats and Carps. The occasional Walleye, but I want to get better at consistancy and know where or how to find the good spots for Cats, Carps and especially Walleye. Is there a pattern or a time that is best for different species? I appreciate any response, thank you in advance! |
