Went out after shooting some geese and enjoying part of Beerfest. Had not been out for a while so we hit up my old spots. We had constant action on all rods using goldeye, worms, and suckers. The only problem was we could not get very many to bite. Ended up with one 8lb tht bit before dark. Hopefully we can get into some bigger ones next time that will actually take the bait insted of conpletely mangling it. I heard of a 38 incher that was caught recently but not sure if it was a fishing story or not.

The fall catfish bite is on and there are opportunities to be had. Fish are being caught in the Grand Forks area along the cut banks with faster moving currents or out in the smaller holes and mid-river structure near faster water. The fish are on the move looking for food and that mean you have to be on the move to stick with the fish and up the odds of heading them off. The Drayton stretch is holding steady with fishing coming in the mid river holes or on the outside edges in the fast boiling water. Bait is still goldeye but the fish are beginning to show signs of moving on to frogs. Sucker continues to not be the bait of choice but as in the past don't leave home without them. Water levels are a little on the high side for this time of year but are perfect for being able to move where ever you want to go with few problems. The feed bags are on so be sure to take full advantage.

Fished slack waters of Fargo in the evening. Used dead and live sucker minnows. Managed only one 6 lb catfish caught on the dead sucker minnow. Seems like we have had more bites lately in the shallow's versus the faster deep water, maybe due to cooler temps. Going to smoke this fish - first time giving that a try. Good luck.

Fishing around Grand Forks is holding steady this week. A quick drop in the barometer may have slowed things for a day or so but back in the saddle again as they say.
Patterns seem to be changing to coincide more with the fall feed. The best fishing is on the outside of snags in the faster water or the steep drop offs with holes near by. This is showing the fish are getting into fall feed pattern. The best areas to fish are where there is a sharp drop from the bank into a trough with a hole near by. A stronger current seems to be helping as well. Other spots to look are right behind the stumps of mid river stumps and trees. Best bait remains to be goldeye with frogs showing signs of turning back on. I've been hearing of suckers producing but have had limited success with them myself the past couple weeks. Last night I found the fish off the drop offs and behind the stumps with visible currents. Still lots of pick up and drops (probably due to the barometer) but this will settle out as the week goes on. Had fair numbers of fish with nothing huge. Mr. Wonderful hit but got off before we could do much with him. |

For fisherfinder- they are biting on jigs with double twister tails.
Went out late tonight for some cats north of fargo abit. we caught 6 cats. ranging in size from 3lbs-8lbs. nothing to big. Lots of hits but they were getting away with a lot of bait. they were biting on suckers pretty good, but they were bitting of chunks of them. Even caught a few with worms. we fished the twisties from shore. Overall a successful night. |

Red River (North) - Thursday, August 19, 2010 | |
Took the kid out from noon untill 4:30. Had a blast, roughly 20 some odd cats ranging in the nice 20-24 inches. Where were they when the turnys were going on. All but 2 came from a long flat run that was 8-10 feet deep. Used frogs and sucker. All fish came from suckers.
After we got bored sitting decided to try and just drift over the flat. Never tried drifting for the cats so figured what the hey. Well for some reason had to heed the call of nature and was standing at the back of the boat. In the middle of adding water to the river kid yells out "Dad your rod". He cant get it cause he already has a fish on. So sure enough the fish will always bite when you are unable to get to your rod. Kid ended up with 12lb fish that was 33inch. ![]() Me I ended up with a nice 3lb or so bike fork. ![]() Ending of the story Never been so Damn glad to be out fished by a five year old. |

I explored a few favorite haunts on the Red and it's tributaries' yesterday, looking for typical seasonal patterns on walleye and cats.
What I found was the walleye were hitting cranks, as they appear to be feeding on young of the year Drum (]AKA Sheephead)....typical for August and September. Lighter tones of high contrasting patterns of crankbaits in mid to deep divers do well for me, fished close to current on the dams or rock dam riffles on shallower tributaries.
This pattern tends to fade in and out as the flow increases and decreases with the rains...slower flows is often better for this pattern. Bulked up 4" to 5" twisters on 3/8 jigs very often do well here too.
Cats...they were hungry. Slip floats and cuts and wad's of dead minnows produced steady action for me on the dams. They appear to be minnow feeding fairly aggressively, as this presentation would suggest. Plenty of Goldeye/Mooneye, and Drum action too. Very much a mixed bad fishing experience to be had...lots of fun.
The rivers are surprisingly clean for the amount of run off due to the rains we have seen recently. This tends to get the ball rolling for early fall walleye action. Multi-species action is the name of the game in early fall. Don't completely hang up the rods for the guns, you will miss out on a lot of the best fishing of the open water season.
Good times ahead is my forecast for fall.

Catfishing around Grand Forks is holding steady with decent numbers being caught but the size lacking a little bit. Best bite has been tight in the wood along the shores in 8-12 feet of water. Just upstream of root balls have been producing the best numbers of fish but on the small side. Larger fish are coming on the deeper holes along side or behind the snags. Cut frozen sucker has been the best bait for fishing in these wood piles.
The Drayton stretch of river has not been fast and furious in terms of numbers but the average size is outstanding. Fish the deeper holes and troughs. Usually one or two fish per spot and time to move. Best baits have been goldeye hands down with fresh cut sucker next. Frog has not been the answer for two weeks now. |
