I'm looking to buy a four wheeler, mostly need it to move snow to keep my road/driveway clear.  Also would use it for ice fishing, hunting, etc.  My question is to those of u that use one, what size do i need to move snow efficiently and what brands do u recommend.  I realize that question is a little like do u like ford or chevy but I've never owned an ATV and am looking for suggestions.  Thanks.

There are alot of really good brands of fourwheelers out there. I've ran a few different brands & I'll say that the Kawasaki Brutte Force 750 is what I like the best. All the Brutte Force models are good machines. We bought ours last fall and it hasn't failed me yet.

The thing I think you want to remember to buy is a fuel injected model, easier starting in cold weather and really fuel effecient. The Brutte Force is v-twin EFI so its going to have more power, better aceleration, better performance, and really relliable. Trust me when I say power, this machine will blow your socks off.

If you have any questions on the Kawaskis and you live near Minot, ND. Dean is the owner/sales at Action Cycles in Minot located by Menards. I've had good luck with this place and the service is really good. He does offer test rides.

I've got a Suziki 750 King Quad 4x4 with differential lock and it moves snow very well.  I'm using a 54" Eagle blade.  I"ve got a couple spots where it's pushed the snow piles 5' high.  When snow gets hard packed and frozen down however a guy still has to either knock it loose with a shovel or go into it slowly with a blower because that hard stuff will stop an ATV in it's tracks, or at least it stops mine.  I am able to peel off very small slices of the very hard snow but it takes lots longer than either breaking it up with a shovel 1st or just blowing the very hard stuff.

I like my Suzi but I've got very little to compare it to as I haven't ridden very many ATV's and I did virtually no research on them.  I do know that the EFI makes for very easy starting, even in the cold.  A good friend owns a Suzuki dealership, as such, that's what I ride.

On our farm we have two Honda's, a Rancher 420 and a Rubicon 500. I use the 500 to push snow and when i have good traction that thing can push snow have no problem pushing up piles 4ft high and i run a 60 inch cycle country plow.It is on it's 9th season of pushing snow and has held up pretty good i have had to rebuild a few of the piviot spots just that the holes were pretty wore. Our 500 is an 05 model with 8500 miles on it and the only problem i have had with it was the water pump went out this fall but other than that nothing at all. The Rancher is EFI which starts really easy in cold weather so i use that one for ice fishing. I don't really care for the electric shift all that much i wouldn't want it for pushing snow would kinda be a pain to run the winch for the plow and shift with the same hand. IMO Honda's are pretty heavy built machines that 500 is like a tank just a good solid machine.

Just look on bisman. Kaw,suzi, artic, are mostly what are on there because there resale is terrible,IMO there junk to, If your going to keep it for a long time then go for it but if u trade a couple of years then buy honda or canam. Not to many people get rid of them. As u can see on bisman. As far as size for snow pushen a 400 would be fine. I got a 800 can am and a 400 rancher., but u now what they say. go big or go home. Like they said go with a fuel injected one.

PS. It's fun keepin the little punk's in town with there sporttrax's 4 wheeler's behind me with my 800 4 wheel drive beast. Good luck

I bought a new Polaris 500 last year and use it for all my household work. Pushing snow, cleaning my trees, hauling everything with a trailer, etc. Only had it on the ice once, but hope that'll change this year.

So far it's been a great machine, had a little trouble with my winch, but that was the dealers fault when they installed it. I didn't get the EFI, and I guess if I'd buy another I would. I never have trouble starting it, but it's kept in the garage year round. Even when it  has been out in the cold it starts great, but I have to let it warm up for a few minutes before getting going.

Plenty of power to move snow and other odd jobs. I don't know if I'd go any less than a 500 for pushing snow though. A guy can never have too much power if it's going to be used for work.
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

I have owned or test driven 5 different brands of 4X4's and I would never buy anything but a Honda from now on.

It definately doesnt sound like Clay; but when you are loyal to friends and treated well by a dealership it makes the decision pretty easy.

YES, I am that foolish!

I live in Minot and pushed a TON of snow just last week. I have a honda foreman 400 4x4 and had no issues with it. Chained up the front tires and was able to push through most anything once I cleared a track and I can "stack" the snow pretty high up.

Make sure you get handwarmers installed when you choose one!

How much snow are we talking about?  Driveway that is 36X40 or are we talking a 200 foot driveway with another 300 feet of road?

That is IMHO a good question because if we are talking about the later, then I would recommend a UTV with a plow before an ATV.

If we are talking just some smaller stuff to push snow, then here is my opinion.

1.  I wouldn't just count on what everyone on here says so go do some research and get on the ATV forums and look at what others are saying.  fisher's atv world is a good site to check out.  I am sure there are others as well.

2.  Don't get anything below 500.  It is up to you whether you want EFI or not.  I don't have it and haven't had any issues, but if money isn't a big deal then go EFI.  It will have better resale value as well.  I was on a budget and it was a $1250 difference so I opted with the carb.

3.  IMHO Honda and Yamaha probably make the best ATV's out there.  I have a Polaris 500 Sportman and I am very happy with it.  I push snow all the way across our yard and then some.  My buddy has an Arctic Cat 550 and it doesn't work well for snow because the winch is located so low on the ATV that the cable rides against the plow turning handle and he keeps breaking his winch cable.  Unless they have a fix for this, I would stay away from AC.  The guy on the other side of me has a big Yamaha with a big wheel kit and I will tell you he can push some snow with that rig and when we go out in the spring I can't get into the areas he can when it comes to mud, but mine is a tad bit faster down a gravel road.

visit some websites, read reviews, go test drive, and then make a decision.  Good luck with your purchase.
Take a kid hunting instead of hunting for your kid.

First I am a Dad, then a husband, then a hunter.  Sometimes I get the husband and hunter mixed up, but luckily my wife remembers what order they should be in. :-)

Workhorse, go with a Honda (rubicon 500). Resale is top's. They don't have the best ride(no independent suspension)  Mine starts all the time in cold weather, but not easy. primer could be handier. I pull my boat around and have hauled my 10x14 fishhouse (heavy) around on the lake (if little snow).  A good ride and very nice rig is the Sportsman 500. If speed is what you want, CanAm

I have a artic cat 700 efi it pushes snow like a beast. When I did my research before buying a machine they all have there problems. Just to let you know if you buy a honda and it breaks down it does cost more coin to fix. And a lot of the dealerships told me polaris ride nice but are a soft machine parts wear out easy and more breakdowns. My artic cat does ride a little ruff but i liked the ground clearence and its  a beast in mud cant be stoped . Just rember get a efi  starts way easier and more fuel efficent . If I had the extra cash I would have got a suzki quad king best machine all around.
