Hello everyone! Quick question about rebuilding a stikemaster ice auger carb. I've got an early 2000s model Mag 2000 auger and it's been running kind of crappy lately. It worked, but I had to play with the choke while drilling my holes to keep it running with enough power to punch through the ice. So I figured I would order a carb rebuild kit from Strikemaster. Well, got it all back together tonight, went to fire it up and it ran for a few minutes and died.
When I was putting it together i thought the welch plug that came with the kit (that covers the low speed jets) looked kind of small. It did not fit as tight as the OEM one I took out of it. So last night I put some fingernail polish around it after I seated it to make sure it didn't leak (read to do that on the web).I let it dry over night. Anyway, after it died I laid it on it's handle and noticed fuel dripping from the butterfly shaft. Pulled the plug and sure enough it was fouled out. From what i could tell, the fuel was leaking from the low speed jet ports.
Should fuel leak from there if the needle valve is working correctly? I replaced it with one from the kit. It looked the same as the one I pulled out of it and I made sure the spring was re-installed.
I haven't pulled it back apart because at this point I am pretty frustrated.....
At this point I am into it for $42.00 (strikemasters shipping rates are ridiculous).... Strike master does not list a carb assy or the welch plug on it's own (I'd be hesitant to re-order one from them). So I Looked up a TC 300 Tecumseh (the engine on it) on Sears parts direct website and they had a complete parts break down. I can get the welch plug on it's own for $2.88 +shipping or the carb assy for $60.88.
I guess I am curious if anyone else has rebuilt their carb and if they ran into any problems? I want to hit Darling tomorrow and at this point might be swinging by Scheels to pick up a new auger in the morning! I've been wanting to buy a new auger anyway and this just might be my excuse.
If you have any advice, please share it with me-
