real or replica?

i was just sitting here pondering the joys of fishing. thinking about how sweet its going to be to hit the water again this year. then i started thinking about hooking into the big one. and the question comes up, do you mount the real thing or do you get a replica made?

i have seen many walleye, northern, etc mounts on this site. just wondering what you guys have done in the past? personally, i like the idea of releasing a 10+ lb walleye, so it can keep reproducing.

so, here is what i would like to find out.
1. cost: whats the difference in cost between mounting the real thing vs a replica?

2. quality and durability: im guessing there is no substitute for the real thing, but can a replica have as good of quality? also, does one "hold up" longer than the other?

3. availbility: are there any taxidermists in the area that do both?

4. timeline: will it take longer to get one mount back vs the other?

5. thoughts: am i in the right for wanting to release that big old pig back into the lake? or is that fish going to be towards the end of its reproductive life?

if it was hooked bad or something to the point where it won't make it, then yes, i would keep it. but i guess i would like to learn what the pros and cons are.
Hold my beer while i land this walleye!!

Replicas will last forever if they're not abused. Skin mounts will last a very long time but will eventually show aging. I have a walleye mount that is 15yrs old that looks excellent. The ends of the fins are just now starting to show some fraying. Very minor though.

I think the prices are now becoming comparable. It used to be that the replicas were quite a bit more spendy.

As far as quality it all depends on the taxidermist.

The thing about a replicas is that the fish is still swimming.

On average replicas will run you more $. The best thing to do is stop in to a taxidermist and check them out. Some replicas are horrid and others look better than the real thing! My uncle had a replica made out of a big northern and it looks amazing! If i catch a monster the measurements and pictures will go to that guy! Amazing work.

Great topic.

From now on, all walleyes caught by this guy are getting thrown back in the water, and I'm going to have a nice big picture blown up and framed. Cost is less than a replica. Also, it really captures the moment (location, funny looking smile or the "me tough fisherman, me no smile" look, etc etc)

Go to "ice leaders".com and check out all of the walleye/red river ice fishing videos in the archives and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I plan on adding a Sauger, Pike, Bluegill, Crappie, and a Perch, then I'm done.

http://iceleaders.com/videoarchive.html Click on the link for "Early Ice Monster Walleye" and they talk about it more.
