How many of you have been "quilled" by fish? for some reason this year it happened twice,it not only burns like crazy but fester's up,dang gill nailed me last winter and then 4 weeks ago a walleye while pullin one out of the live well, finger swelled up so big I had to lance it a week later and it still isn't right.Does your fingers ever get normal again? Must be some kind of payback from taking their buddies...

I've been quilled before many times.  Usually when I get lazy and don't pay attention.  Haven't had any nasty infections but it does sting for a few days when I get a nasty one.

As for catfish, yeah, I baby them things!

White bass take great pains to ensure they stab me wit their pectoral fins.  No festering though, just a four letter word or two and send them back to the lake.

If I get quilled the guilty fish usually meets "THE SEPTOR"!

The worth of the fish at the end of the day depends not on it's size or number, but the effort devoted to catching it.

snow,
be very cautious with your finger.  it  is possible to get an infection in the tendon sheath (either the flexor or extensor tendon) that can be very serious.  it is also possible to get an infection in the joint itself which can be equally serious.  if your finger is swollen like a sausage, is very painful with range of motion, and/or you have pain when you palpate the area proximal to the wound you should get your finger looked at by an orthopedic surgeon.  from the sounds of things you need an oral antibiotic, at the very least.

oral antibiotics, the kind you take by mouth as opposed to IV antibiotics, the kind you take via IV.  pretty self explanatory.  old billy boy make a guy stay on his toes though!!!  you never know what the definition of "is" is!!  ha ha.

I get stabbed all the time, probably because I am never very careful until a couple seconds after I should have been.  Never had anything like you are talking about.  Of course, I do (very dutifully) take a bunch of oral antisceptic after I am done fishing.

LOL,I'm sure it will happen again, its not the 1st time I've been nailed, its crazy how  that this is the 1st time (year) the pricks became infected, not once but twice.I've talked to other guys recently with the same reaction, almost like a bee sting that does'nt go away, benedryl keeps the swelling down.

i took a bullhead spine to the throat when i was young and stupid (12 ish).  i'd taken up swallowing minnows for spare change from buddies.  we found a bullhead in the river on a baseball trip to valley city.  i didn't realize they had spines that poke out like a catfish.  tried to swallow it and it got stuck in my throat.  i eventually got it back up once i got ahold of it with my fingers.  it sure scraped me up on the way out tho.  tis top 3 on my "dumbest things you've ever done" list.  bonus part was that i got paid my 75 cents...
