Default Question on PROPS.

I am a new boat owner & actually took my boat (TR-186 Triton w/110 Yamaha 4 stroke) out for the first time yesterday. It has the non SS 3 blade standard prop. Once the boat is up on plane it runs just fine, but getting it up on plane is the problem. It just seems like there's too much weight in the rear & the bow just doesn't want to drop even with it trimmed all the way down to start with. It just seems to take too long!

I was told by someone that what I need is a SS 4 blade performance prop to get it out of the hole more quickly. They also said that it might effect the top end, but not all that much & that's fine with me.

Please send your reply to jimjo0212@gmail.com so I make sure I see it.

I am looking for advice. Thank you.... Jim
Thanks,
Poolman

Thanks for that tip Radar13. My last boat had a Hydorfoil & it did seems to help. Also, I apoligize everyone, my motor is a 115 hp (not a 110). Duh!
Thanks,
Poolman

Sound to me like you need to drop 2 degrees in pitch on your current prop.  You will gain a slight edge with stainless, but its maybe 300rpm's over alumnium.  I would bet you are running a 17 degree pitch prop, and I would go down to a 15 degree.  Will probably gain some speed, as I bet your rpms aren't anywhere near where they should be.  That motor has a redline around 6300 rpm's and you want to be as close to that as you can.

Thanks for the tip. You're right about the rpm's, as all I can get out of it (if I remember correctly) is about 5400. That's a far cry from 6,300. Can you tell me how to look & see what prop I do have for sure; is it stamped on the prop itself? I did take a quick look & all I saw was a long string of numbers which of course didn't mean a thing to me. Maybe I need to look closer, huh?

One fellow recommended a Hydofoil, but after thinking about it, that would stop me from parking in my garage withoput having to put it on an angle (I need that space for the wife's car). Sio I think that's out. Sounds like a new prop is the ticket!

Thanks again... Jim

I am pretty sure the max recommended rpm on a F115 is 6,000.  I have one and am pretty sure that's the number I recall reading in the book.

Like others on here, I suggest going down an inch or two on pitch and trying a hydrofoil.  It really helps at the low end, at the worst it will take 1-2 mph off the top end, at the best it will flatten out your boat and give you an extra few mph at top end.

I would consider the Hydrofoil, but right now I have only about 3 or 4 inches to spare as far as fitting the boat in my garage. I'm pretty sure that Hydrofoil adds much more than that! No can do I'm afraid. Unless, it can easily be put on & removed. Can you do that, do you think? Maybe I should check that out, huh?
Thanks,
Poolman

Propworks - (701) 255-3864
Toybox - (701) 663-3100

Both are great to work with.  The guy at propworks is very knowledgable on props and how they affect motor performance so I would start with him. He's a good conservative too!

Speaking of props. I have a 1992 150 hp yamaha pro V motor. On an 1850 skeeter. Spun the hub on the prop last weekend. Had to remove the prop to see what the dia. and pitch was. Its a 13/3/4 with a 24 pitch. Does anyone know what the high rpm range should be on that motor? I am normally running below 5000. I sent the prop off for repair, but it got me thinking that my boat might not have the proper prop on it. By the way, it is a stainless steel prop.
