Pre-selling / Pre-buying a boat....Thoughts?

I have seen many sites where someone puts there boat up for sell say now with a delivery date in September. Have any of you bought or sold a boat this way? I am considering doing the same thing to find a buyer and get things locked down for my current boat but want to make sure neither I nor the seller gets screwed in the end with either party backing out. What would you suggest is the best means of doing this?

The two things I am came up with so far are;

Down Payment (XX%)

Agreed upon delivery Date

Anything else you can think of?

I would be a little scared as to what kind of condition the boat will be in when I get it.  You almost have to have some condition statement or setup a price range up front based on fall condition of the boat (carpets, scratchs, hours).  I know if my boat was sold and I could still run it all summer, I may not keep it up as well.

As a buyer, it would be a concern.

Very valid, thanks for the input!

1) Condition.  Maybe build a professional detailing and buffing into the sale as well as clause for backing out and getting down payment for beat-up equipment.

2) Hours on rig.  $$ off for hours over agreed amount.

3) Who pays for transfer of warranties.  Is the seller a prostaff and will you be considered the "1st owner" in the eyes of the manufacturer?

4) If it is a pro or prostaffer for manufacturer get references because likely it isnt their 1st boat sold this way.

YES, I am that foolish!

I am in the process of this right now.  What I did was set the price using a rough projection of what it will be worth at the end of the season and knocked a few bucks off of that to cover the fact that it will have to be stored all winter before use.

It has to be a deal that you get the money you need and the buyer gets a great deal for waiting and buying at the end of the season.

I also take a down payment to hold it and plan to have it all cleaned up for delivery.  A guide should never let the boat get run down anyway it is making money until the sale date.

Thanks for the insight Brad and the last statement is a very valid point that I think the buyer would resonably understand. Last thing I would want to show a client is a run down boat, doesn't make them all warm and fuzzy inside! LOL

Just out of curiousity, what are you running?  I plan to upgrade in the fall, as I have cash and storage to hold two boats over winter and sell mine in the spring.  You can send me a PM if you would like.

We did this for 15 years through LUND, but maybe a little different. We got our boats factory direct sent to dealer who rigged them how we wanted them. We had enough friends and the dealer knew some people also that wanted deals like this. We talked with them before ordering so they get color and options and made the deal. Most important is the shape they get it in when you are done. That was our Big plus, We got a down payment and rest was no problem.  made deal through dealer . Was good working with family and friends. When all was said and done we fished in a new rig for nothing, we wanted to make no money and it worked out great. These deals exist no more unless you are some big name super pro now. The tournament industry really died hard not long ago. Was a fun ride.

And this is where we are kinda getting too now that the business has picked up a couple sponsors, not going to be able to go scott free like you mentioned but should be able to get away with only making payments for about 6 months out of the year.
