HH,

I apologize for the smart a post.  On a serious note, does the oil activity of the last years have any affect on the deer population in 3A1?  I've had people from that area who have blamed the population on that factor alone.

Bad Idea, I'm a horn snob and passed on a young 4x4 this weekend that I watched half hour b4 he bedded down.  Ran into a father son and helped them go get him.  Buck had good genetics 2-3yr old 115-120 inch range and would have been a great buck next year, on the other hand a father and son got to enjoy the harvest together and there memory was worth it.  Little guy was screaming we got him.  I sat back and thought thats what it is all about!  Congrats to the gentleman from Minot, hope you and your son have many great hunts together!

For the record, Geothermal said , What if everyone onlyshot big bucks.  But I get your point.  Shoot what you want, Ill shoot what I want but lets not tell each other what deer to shoot .  Just like farming, You farm your land , I will farm mine.  I will not tell you what you have to plant on your north 80.

Headhunter Said:

Geothermal said what do you have if everyone only hunted big bucks etc etc.  Well you'd have a better population of adult deer with big racks every year, Why?  cause if everyone held out for a "big one"  less deer would be killed, its simple.  If everyone shoots a buck to "fill a tag",  ,,, more total bucks are killed which wrecks age structure of the deer herd.

Good to see there are some that hunt for the meat and realize that hunting can be funner if you take it with a grain of salt . Shoot what you want to shoot in my opinion. Not everyone can afford the time or money to wait out for a big buck , And to the guys saying don't shoot small bucks wait for a big buck ,,,,, If everyone only shot big bucks what would we have left ? For the record, I usually shoot what ever buck on the farm that I don't want around. I usually shoot one with a scrubby looking rack , Especially if I see him chasing does. Oh thats right , Culling scrub bucks doesn't work.

North dakota hunting is based on family fun and everyone getting a chance to shoot as they please. If throphy hunting is your thing you can still do that as well. What would be the challenge if all were 150 deer? The trophy status would go up to 170 and although we would have lot of 150's nobody would care, trophy is now 170.

Bucks would dominate winter food and no more does, no more deer everyone mad. After putting one on the bumper tonight shoot them all.

Fill your tags so other don't fill their pants!

If you want more "big" bucks, get a movement going to move rifle season into October and out of the rut, and good luck with that! May as well try to get centerfire rifles kicked out too, slugs and muzzleloaders only, that'll "save" some bucks.

The only "problem" we have is the young pup hunters who have watched to much TV "hunting" and have come up during the "good ole days" of ND deer hunting (2000-2008). The "good ole days" may very well be wrapping up, get used to it.

Uhh, whatever, but the fact remains, the more small bucks you pass on the more good ones for next year.  You just can't argue with that fact.    No, no, no, really.....you can't.

Far as culling deer?  ND isn't managed to the degree that shooting "inferior bucks" will improve genetic pontential.  Shooting "basket racks" in ND  = killing a young buck.  They all get big as a general rule of thumb in ND if allowed to grow up .    Our genetics rock. Just need age.................

I agree, but point restrictions don't protect basket racks, they protect forkies and spikes..... Look in the photos at the deer I shot this year imagine seeing something like that only a 3pt and not being able to shoot it because of an atleast 4 pt restriction. I have seen deer like that around here big heavy 3pts,  a point restriction would help that deer continue to breed. As stated before the easiest way to increase the age of our bucks in ND is to move the rifle season. Either that or hope people choose to harvest less immature deer.

People can shoot whatever size buck they want and that is the way it is.  If you are having trouble finding bigger deer i suggest doing some scouting prior to rifle season.

Growing up back in the Hills a doe tag was hard to obtain.  Any buck was a "trophy".  We don't have to be like that here.  IMHO, shoot what you want remembering small bucks become big ones.

Compare an average ND 2.5 year old buck to an average 2.5 year old buck in a state or area with truly great genetics.

Our genetics arent bad, but id hardly say they "rock".

Sure if would be nice if giant bucks were running around ubiquitously, but when would the novelty start to wear off? Another thing it will do is bring major attention from the hunting industry to our area, and I don't think we need that. I like the fact that it is hunting and you are not gauranteed anything. I hope everybody gets their chance at a buck of a lifetime but plain and simple some people could care less. Most guys I know that get mad when people shoot smaller bucks or want some sort of restriction put on are just greedy selfish people who could of cared less who shot that deer when it grew up as long as it was themselves. I spend alot of Money on tags from Different states, to Canada, and to reservation licenses and I hardly punch any of them anymore but I guess the thrill of the hunt and knowing I had a chance at something special made it all worth while. One thing I am not a fan of however, is someone who says they shoot a deer just to fill a tag, or are not happy with a deer once they decide to drop the hammer.

I'm gonna guarantee that buck a ride in the pickup truck!
