Caught a pike on Irvine on saturday that had a growth about five inches across  about three fourths the way down its back. It bulged out both sides but the fish looked healthy otherwise. Anybody else ever see one like this? I"ve caught a lot of pike but never seen one like this.

I can't say I have caught a pike, but I caught a Walleye today with a funny growth on it's gill. looked like the size of it's eyeball but prob. 1/2 thick. Never have seen it before. Will post a pic when I get a chance.

Did you release it? Maybe the same one?

You can't aim a duck to death.

Was it a pink growth on the outside of its skin or a lump under its skin?

The skin color was totally normal. I kept it and filleted it. It apeared to be just a growth and  was about the same color and texture as the rest of the fillet. Other than the growth the fish appeared to be just another fat healthy pike. It was about 22 to 24 inches long.

I hope most people give the ND state fish more respect than this. if you don't like to eat northern because of the y bones, try this.http://gf.nd.gov/multimedia/ndoutdoors/issues/2011/jan/docs/removing-y-bones-from-pike.pdf

I also sugest that all who read this try to find the sportsmans guide to game fish printed in 1968 by Byron Dalrymple, very good. don't get me wrong, I enjoy catching and eating walleye, but every fish in ND outside of carp, drum, goldeye, and buffalo deserve equal respect, for all of them taste good and are worth going after. the first sentance of the walleye fishing part of the guide is very true.

free thinker = no thinker
