Mandan resident, Kevin Lech, was a bit surprised to find this velvet mule deer during the November deer gun season. Kevin made a 200+ yard shot to down his trophy.

I've seen a couple velvet bucks taken these past few years during rifle season. Not sure why, they weren't stags either. Maybe stress from past winters Wayne?

Last year I got a buck in full velvet too. Mine was a bit later than this though. I got it on the last day of December during bow season. I was a little surprised to find that it still had velvet. I always wondered why he was still in velvet. I figured something more important was occupying his time during the period when he should have been rubbing his antlers on trees.

NIce deer! my brother shot a whitetail in November years ago in full velvet also. His testicle sack seemed damaged for some reason. Only in nature....

OK, I have pheasant hunted with this guy :

1. Either he is a way better shot with a rifle than a shotgun or
2. He had help or
3. This is photoshopped , notice how his fingers conveniently cover part of the tag

Nice deer Lech , couldn't resist

Knowing Kevin as I do, I'm not surprised that he shot a buck with small jewels.

We have been seening a lot more of this recently, I'm not sure if there are more bucks out there or just that more hunters are reporting it.
One common feature to all that I have been involved with is the testicles are very small for some reason, thus less testosterone production which contributes to softer antlers and no urge to rub because of no rutting stimulus. My son Trevor's youth buck taken on Sept 24th was in velvet later than I expected. (It had smaller than average testicles) I took a buck in Montana several years ago at the end of Octobter that was still in velvet and had a soft spongy rack, again, small peanut sized testicles.
kevin also mention that a friemd of ours took a buck that had a soft spongy rack, may the oil field traffic and chemialcs are having an effect????
I'm checking with one of the biologists for additional info.

Any chance you would be willing to disclose what unit this was from?  I put a stalk on a full velvet 4x4 the last weekend before the rifle season.  I got within 30 +/- yards from him but couldn't see him through the brush.  Just curious if it would happen to be the same deer.
