My uncle gave me his 700 Wildcat Tourning Cat.  If I didn't have that, I'd still be dreaming of what you have...or your dad has.

Looks like it may just get put to use.  Ice was just opening up to easy travel but if the system develops we could be right back to snowmobile only...or TRACK only.

I know it wont help me catch fish, nothing will!!!!! They are the Arctic Crap ones, and they aren't cheap. Basically (you do the math) that's a $14,000 unit. Same as an Arctic Cat Prowler 1000.

A little harder to steer than the tires. Goes through snow like a SOB. Overall a nice ride.

Question:

Is there a lot of blowing or sifting snow that makes you get angry when riding?  Seems to me by just guessing that the front tracks would throw up or stir up snow which would drift over a guy.  Or no?

Oh no, they throw up snow bad. I took the wife for a ride yesterday and it was fine on the snowmobile trail, then I went through the field and it was bad. She was giggling the whole time because she was getting snow in her face. The windshield helps alot. and that's the reason we went with the "cold weather front", not so much for the low temps but for snow getting into the radiator and whatnot.

It's worth it though Tim, I'd rather run this setup vs. a sled.

The Litefoot Mattracks are real spendy. Like $5,500 I think. I have the Tiger Trax ones and they weren't as bad.

Yeah, but how much of that weight is resting on the the area that the skis touch the ground. Mattracks says they run around 3/4 lbs per square inch of surface pressure. Not sure which is right....just sayin.

Go get your sled stuck and I will bet your sled that Josh could pull you out with his four-wheeler!

I don't doubt they have more float but I never checked into it.

One thing I do not like is the sift of snow when cruising.  That would get a little aggravating at times I think.  Would like to try a set out sometime but it would require a bigger ATV than the ole Rancher.

Top end?  35 is or more?

I had a set on my Polaris 4 wheeler and although I like it, the snowmobile still came in handier in deep snow that tends to build up on the lakes.  Also gotta be careful when going up and over some hard compact snow at varying angles that the tracks don't flip over.  Had that happen with the mattracks and although an easy fix, sucks when trying to drive back with no steering.  A buddy had that happen last year on his and he as a different brand of tracks.

what kind of "cruising speed" and top end do you get out of that set up?    Probably just slow enough to give a yote a sporting chance?

I had a friend with 600 ho polaris with a set of mattracks. in powder they werent as good as a snow cat. where my cat wouldnt break through the crust it would go to the bottom. I am rideing snowcats with 16x156 and a 20x156 tracks.  I believe they may out do a groomed trail sled. not trying to get into a wheeler verse snow cat. just my experiance.

Sled will go through more snow hands down.  Have a ski doo 800 mountain track.  You can stop with the sled, have powder over the wind shield, and still take off without a problem.  Also, with a snowmobile I would assume you have a better ride and more stability.

Yes, about 50mph is top end. I'm not going to be that guy that says "my 4 wheeler can go places your sled can't" but during a demo in Williston, the guy on the 4 wheeler with trax was pulling up next to sleds that got stuck and giving them the middle finger. Now I'm sure alot has to do with the rider, aka if you don't know how to ride a sled your going to get stuck. All I know is it's an awesome setup and I don't care how much snow is on the ice on Van Hook this year Timmay, we won't be confined to that little dinky area right by the boat ramp!

Yeah from a fishing standpoint you'd be crazy to go faster than 20 to 30 mph in most cases.

I also think the towability of the ATV with the tracks is superior to snowmobiles (well, at least the old age snowmobiles).  I was just looking at the new sleds online last night.  For crying outloud, they have all sorts of neat things.  I thought I was happy with the 1995 700 Touring!

Anyway, yes, if you are going to encounter a bunch of powder you best know how to handle a snowmobile especially when towing or you are going to have a stuck snowmobile.  Thankfully most ice fishing situations don't call for that.  At least I haven't ran into much of that.  Exception is right at shore among the cottonwoods and other vegetation that gobbles up drifting snow.

For me, I'll stick to the snowmobile because I was fortunate to get one from my uncle (plus my dad has two).  An ATV is also accessible but the Rancher just ain't going to be the best rig to suit a set of tracks to.  I'd have to buy a new ATV plus spend the bucks on the tracks.  Maybe in the future.  For now, it is the old 95!  She works good and that's all that matters.

Might have to hit you up for a drive on that rig Jig-em!  Never been on tracks once in my life.

Yes, good point, but I prefer not looking like a tool. Ever watch Jim Shockey? I just can't picture myself in one of those, although it would be a nice feature to have it float.

We have an 09 Prowler with Camoplast tracks on it at the wind farm I work at. The unit with tracks, rims, tires, and a hardcab was around $18K. It does go through alot of snow. The tracks are nice. The prowler and hard cab are junk. Hardcab is very noisy and not weather tight. It doesn't have heat either. I think the tracks are real hard on the transmission and the motor. Speed is greatly reduced along with handling. I would invenst in something different. Just an FYI if looking into them.

Another down side is wear and tear on 4 wheeler parts they don't tell you about is the bad part, my cousin works for Polaris RD dept and they tested them if you put very many miles on better sell in few years, it was not pretty what they wrecked. He did say a snowmobile will go alot futher too. They are a neat invention no dought and quit the ride.

He who dies with the most toys wins.
