In scrambled eggs believe it or not. Medium-soft (NOT rubberized) scrambled eggs with morels and plain white buttered toast is amazing to me anyway.

Just straight up lightly floured and fried in butter is good, but I have a soft spot for the morels in eggs. A port wine reduction full of morels on steak is top notch - then again, what isn't?

We dehydrate about half of them, the other half gets split in half and then "butter-baked" on cookie sheets in a 350F oven until they wilt (coat them with the brush and butter prior to baking). After they cool, they get freezer packed (Foodsaver) for sauces, dressings, and other recipes that need plump buttery shrooms. We use the dried ones in soups, stews, etc. Once dried or butter-baked the things somehow last forever.

Otho, Iowa is where I got infected as a youngster. ;)

I hunt within a 60 mile radius of Fargo. Mostly east of Fargo. The Sandhills SW of Fargo have yielded well on occasion, but not consistently.

Fargo proper is NOT a good place - to much clay. They like sand/gravel soils. Although I did find some freaks growing within a mile of my house last spring. Still blown away by that discovery.

The sandy Missouri river bottoms can be awesome too!

Anywhere you have rain and sandy/gravelly soil you have a chance. Once you stumble upon one, you should find others in conditions similar to where you found that one. And they travel in packs usually. ;)

We typically score 5-15 lbs. Depends on season, how much rain, how long we wait between picks (you can keep going back to get more after they pop). Sometimes just a handfull is found if we're scouting for new spots or it's getting dry. This year they came late, but they're super plump and healthy from all the rain.

Morels are usually sold dried. It takes maybe 15 lbs or so of fresh morels to yield a pound of dried morels.

$1800 sounds pretty high. $100 to $200 for dried is typical.

But we don't sell ours. We prefer to eat them :)

They make great xmas gifts though!

So was mine.

I was near ready to holler "sell! sell!" when I got home. Thought maybe morels had gone up along with oil/gold. ; )

hurry... it's likely the last weekend - but the cold rain coming might provide a few stragglers

grass is getting long, damn buffalo gnats getting nasty, etc., cotton from the trees is coating the shrooms... it's almost over
