What does everyone here use for photo storage?  An online space (such as shutterfly), external hard drive, cds or dvds?  I have a large amount of digital photos on my computer and was wondering what you guys use to store them?

Picasa; it's a free online download.  Been using about 5 years, very satisfied.  Only one I've used.

External hardrives are pretty practical.  CDs or even bigger DVDs can store a ton of photos too, but if you have enough digital photos to fill a terabyte external hard drive you need to start asking somewhere other than fishingbuddy.

I also use flash drives (sticks) or even SD cards that come as big as 32 gigs which is probably all the storage even an amatuer photographer would ever need.  problem with the SD and USB flash drives is they're small & easy to lose.

The problem with online storage is its never truly free and you have to deal with ads and upload time, then you might forget your password, and if you don't log into your account for a long period of time they may close your account to make room for more active users.

I find a CD book full of labeled DVD and CDs is the way to go for ease of storage and price.

4GB Flash Drive for less than $10.00.

At an average of 10 Mega Pixels it will hold 2000 pics

3 terabyte external hard drive for now.
When you shoot sporting events and rodeos its not hard to take 800 photos in a day and with an 18 mp camera it sure can eat up the storage.
Online I use shutterfly and photo bucket.
I just wish palces like Carbonite could back up your external hard drive because you just never know!

Just like your stock portfolio you should be diversifying your storage...

You can never have your important files/photos stored in enough places. I would recommend storing them
  1. on an external hard drive, the pocket ones are nice because you can disconnect them after an upload and go throw the thing in your fire safe or safety deposit box, somewhere off site is best; that way if your house were to burn down you don't lose them on your computer and on the hard drive next to it on the desk. Throw them next to the ammo in your fire proof gunsafe if you want.
  2. burn them do disc, dvd's can hold a lot of photos so this is a good option
  3. flash memory is getting cheaper by the month, you can pick up 32GB and 64GB now for a fairly reasonable price
  4. Online storage; flickr, photobucket, etc.. these are somewhat of a pain to upload at times, especially with a slower connection, but it is a completely off site storage area. There are a lot of good "cloud" storage options opening up so look into those as well.
The thing to remember is that we don't really know the life of storage media, so your hard drive, flash memory, discs, etc. will someday start degrading... could be 15 years or could be 50+ but if they are important to you then its not really worth the chance to just have them backed up in one place.

Kinda freaky ironic but just on Thursday last week I decided I best buy an external drive! I bought a tera for now. Easy beans and got lucky it was fifty bucks off due to rebate. Big sale on a few brands in staples actually. Time for new inventory?

External storage is cheap.  I have a 1.5 tera, 1 tera, and a 500 Gb.  Buy the usb powered ones (Seagate, WD) that do not require to be plugged into the wall.  Also, make sure is has USB 3.0 if your computer is capable.

May as well buy a couple and backup your backup.   I've had them go bad.

Remember, if your house burns down, your external hard drive will also. You should remove it from your computer after backing up your files and store it in a fireproof safe. Also they have fireproof external storage devices, but they are not portable....
