What has everyone been seeing or hearing as far as pheasant numbers now that the snow is all gone?  In our area we have been very surprised.  We have seen and heard just as many roosters as any other spring.  Thought they would have taken a real big hit from the hard winter but so far things look real good.

Where are you located at?  I saw almost 20 between Carington and New Rockford the other day.

Lots of pheasants and deer.  Turkeys seem down and I think they got hit by winter harder than anything else.

Well, I'm a school teacher and bus driver from the Flasher area.  Every spring about this time I start counting the number of roosters I see on my route.  The other day I counted 52 roosters which is a good number compared to other years.  Usually if I count in the thirty's it seems to end up being a pretty good season in the fall.  Of course this depends on ideal weather during the hatch.
The only problem with this is, while I'm seeing good numbers of roosters, I'm seeing very few hens with the roosters.  In previous years I've seen at least a couple of hens with each rooster and one old pimp had 8 hens with him.  Must have been a stud.  Anyway most of the roosters I'm seeing this year don't have any hens with them.  The few that I do see with hens, it is usually one or two.  One rooster i did see had four with him so he's getting his share of the action.  After all of that, I guess I'm just a bit concerned about the up-coming season. Anyway, I hope all of you have a good summer.  Someone asked me this morning if I had any major plans for the summer.  I told them of course: fishing, golf, fishing, golf*********.

Auggie, we are in the Glen Ullin area.

Bluegill, roosters must have kept the hens away from the food during the winter?  That's the first thing I could think of.  I know I have heard of roosters becoming very aggressive with feeding in the winter and running off the hens.  We have seen some hens but hard to tell yet if they are low or not.

Well from being out shed hunting this spring in the Parshall area its easy to see that the pheasant numbers are way down. There are still some around but with the rising waters taking there nesting grounds and the bad winter I think my dog is going to be alittle disappointed this fall :(
Also my wife is from the SW corner by Scranton and her grandmothers farmstead was covered with dead birds this spring. They still have a ton but they lost alot also.

You may find their sheds! But I'll shoot them dead!

Best numbers I've seen have all been in SD.  That's where I'm going.

I agree with the rooster to hen ratio.  I have been out in the country quite a bit lately around the Bismarck and Beulah areas and have seen a surprisingly large amount of roosters but a very low amount of hens.

Most of them died in ND. I suggest you solidify your hunting plans this fall for the surrounding states as they didn't take nearly the hit that ND took.

Also, the deer and waterfowl numbers are way down. I suggest heading south this fall if you plan on having any success.

Also, fish numbers are really looking rough. I suggest Canada if you plan on doing any fishing this year. No point in fishing all of the dead seas in ND.

Dirty's right!  Same with deer.  Not a one around, except for the occasional doe.  All the bucks died!

SD extended their season for that reason. They did a study and found that roosters are far more aggresive for food. Thus they lengthend the season out to March 15th. I haven't heard the results yet, wonder if it worked?
