Pierre, S.D.  Due to the delayed harvest of crops this fall, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission intends to act at its Dec. 3-4 meeting in Pierre on a proposal to raise the three-bird daily pheasant bag limit to five cock pheasants daily.

Under the proposal, the current 15-bird pheasant possession limit would increase to 25 male pheasants.

If adopted, the emergency rule would take effect Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, and remain in place until the current pheasant season ends on Jan. 3, 2010.

This could make for some fun clean up hunts this year :)

I heard something like that on the radio the other day.   I didn't catch that it was just for the last part of this season.  I wonder why they wouldn't open the shooting hours to dawn, if they want to give more opportunities?

They would not ad a week to the season and now they want to shoot 5 a day does not make any sense.  Was it not just to long ago they were telling us numbers were down a little according to the little surveys they do?  Hope we dont have a hard winter if we kill all these extra pheasants.

Thats one of the dumbest things I've heard.  Like Kurt said....what if we have a bad winter.

If the river doesn't freeze this winter and no one can ice fish can we take 8 walleyes this summer?

If we have a bad winter, the more roosters killed the better.  They are way more dominate, and hog food, and cover.    The more roosters killed the better chance the hens will survive. Since one rooster will breed as many hens as he can, the rooster population will not affect next years population much.   And if we have a REALLY bad winter,  and most birds starve, then starting off the winter with fewer mouths to feed, with a limited supply of food, will again help.   And if its REALLY REALLY BAD, then we might as well kill them all before winter does.    In any scenerio, the more roosters killed the better, thats why I'm surprised at how many people don't hunt the month of Dec.   Landowners who want birds around should let people thin out the roosters.

I thought all SD hunters knew this???

Nicely put Rowdie. I doubt a couple of extra birds will hurt a thing. Most people quit chasing them by then.

Why just extend the season then.  They would not do that last year because to many birds would be shot.  there was more corn in this time of year last year than now.  With that kind of thinking they should give us all 10 more deer tags so we can kill all of them before winter to.

We might as well shoot them all then.   That way all the landowners that rent there land out to out of staters won't make any money that year and all the pheasent hunters won't be screwing up my deer hunting.

thnksno, good to see you back on here!  Not for expanding limits, but like the idea of extending the season a week.  in my opinion, late season pheasant hunting is a lot more fun than opener!

One bad problem about extendidng the hunting season is kicking birds out of thick cover in bad weather  hens especially.   This 5 a day limit won't effect the areas that still have corn in the field it will be the areas that have no corn were getting 3 was easy and now 5 a piece will be easy.

I don't see any biological problem with this. However, I do take issue with what appears to me to be a very transparent advertising scheme under the guise of increased "recreation."  I think the American News put it best when they said that it appears the GFP has decided to run a "sale" for the last 5 weeks of the season, perhaps to attract out-of-state hunters who stayed home in Oct/Nov because it was wet and the crops weren't out.  The fact that revenues from hunting may be down this fall should not influence GFP policymaking.

I agree 100%.  It is all for the game and fish to increase the revenue.  Right before christmas.  A perfect time to bring the family to south dakota.

Bhaven...I don't agree with what you say about kicking the hens out of thick cover during the bad weather.  They want you chasing does around the whole month of January when the weather is bad.

Pheasant Proposal Fails

PIERRE, S.D. – A proposal to increase the daily bag limit of pheasants from 3 to 5 was defeated at the monthly GFP Commission meeting in Pierre on Thursday.

A proposal needs five votes from the eight member Commission to become rule, but there were only four supporting the measure so the proposal failed to pass.

The bag limit for pheasants will remain at 3 daily and 15 in possession.

No, I think Bhaven is  right.  I believe I read somewhere, that in the winter, phesants can use too much energy if they are flushed aroung a lot.   When the temps get realy cold they need to be left alone, especially in late winter.  Comparing a bird that is a non-native species, to native speciesf like deer and fish, is armchair biology 101.

I do think its wrong for the GF&P to do it for the reasons ($$$$) they are doing it though.

This was all about money! With over 4.000 less nonresident licenses sold this year it takes almost half a million dollars out of your game and fish revenue. Take in account motels, gas, meals, etc.... It adds up to millions of dollar of lost revenue for the state As far as raising the limit it would have little affect on your overall bird numbers next year. That's a scientific fact. Extending the season could be alot more detrimental to your population if the weather turns bad. Pushing birds hard when they are stressed would kill hens along with roosters, not always immediately, but as the stress of a hard winter carries on. I understand as a resident that less hunters in the field can make for a more enjoyable late season experience. But like I first stated: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!!!

Since all I hunt is SR, my limit is 5 all year anyway, so I really don't care.    I would just as soon see the tourists stay home.
