Pheasant hunting

I was pulling the frozen plants out of the home garden and watched 20 roosters land in the sunflower plot I made. I am going to finish my coffee grad a couple of dogs and go pheasant hunting.

I have noticed many half grown pheasants this week. I think we had three hatches this year.

How are the numbers of birds everyone is seeing this year. Are they as far down as the GF projected?

Here is the first one I got.

Did you finally get that hog you were talking about awhile ago?
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

FYI  hens only have one brood a year.   They may re-nest if their nest is destroyed, but they will only hatch one brood.   There ahve been a lot of late hatches in my area which leads to very young roosters, but there mother hen only raised one brood, it just hatched late.

Pretty sure that's a hen.  Might wanna be careful posting pics of females when we all know you can only legally shoot roosters.

So how you gonna cook this one up?  Pheasant wrapped bacon breast?

Thanks Rowdie for the information. I know hens only produce one brood a year. I guess what surprised me was the amount of different sized pheasants this year. I hunted today and saw 20 roosters fullsized, 20-30 with some color, and about 25 minibirds. They were the size of huns.

Numbers wise i saw about the same number of birds on my land as usually. What are others seeing in the way of numbers this year?

Not sure how many birds we saw.  Walked one little coulee and shot 8 roosters.  Others flew away laughing, some flew away with no shots and others were so small they could barely get their rear end's off the ground.

Wasn't even in pheasant country.  Not sure what is to report over there but I'm guessing there is as many hunters as birds.  So I stay away.

Quit hunting around 10:30.  Might go back out to see if the girls can complete the limit.  They are a little discouraged but hey, you gotta get some field expierence before it becomes instinct.  Still fun to watch them fly and the guns go bang...but no dead bird.

Except the wind stinks.  Plus the snow makes it a we bit wet out.  Oh well, were huntin!

We went out most of the day and only seen a few birds. Places that usually held 20 or 30 birds have maybe one or nothing. Pheasant hunting doesn't look to good in our neck of the woods.

The second half of your sentence might explain the first half.

Some hunting spots were as good or better than last year while others  had nothing compared to last year.  It seemed to depend on the distance that the spots were from the good winter cover of last winter.  We started at 9:00 and were done by 11:00.   Six hunters.

Birds everywhere this year.  I thought last year was great, but it may actually be better this year.  8 man limit in 2 hours.  Done by 10:15 yesterday.

Without a doubt, coming out into nature is one of the neatest things there is to do, but you also have to be careful. That’s why I always try to pack the heat — try to pack a gun. Just a little bit — pack some heat. Now this isn’t too — this isn’t much of a big boy, I don’t want to kill the animal, but I do want to warn it, and say “hey, I think you’re pretty neat, but I respect your distance.” There’s bears out here, there’s mountain cougars, and biting goats.

I hunted from North of Spiritwood to south of Ypsilanti and did not see one bird. I guess if I want to go hunting next year I better grow my own. Does anyone know where I can get a bulk order of some pheasant chicks for this spring?
