pretty sure it depends on where the fish come from. you can't catch them in one lake and transfer them to a pond. As far as stocking your own pond, the game and fish has programs to help with it, depending on the public access allowed, the viability of the project, and whatnot. As far as in a tank, they are legal, as long as you didn't catch them from public waters.

The way it was described to me when I have kept native species in the past is...It is legal to catch and keep a game or non-game fish specie in an aquarium at home as long as 1. you have a valid ND fishing liscense. 2. it is not released, or especially not released into another body of water.  3. it counts as one of your bag/possesion limits if such a limit exists for that specie.   4. it is not a protected, endangered, or size resricted fish. i.e. you would need a CITES permit to keep a pallid sturgeon.

So unless the law has changed in the last couple years it should be perfectly fine as long as you abide by the laws that are already in place.  even if you would release that "pet fish" back to where you caught it that would fall under "culling" and be illegal.  if you released it in a different lake that would fall under ANS and such.  and always remember if you have 10 walleyes in the fish tank at home you can't keep any at the lake since you'd be over your possesion limit.  and if the size limit on musky is 38" you can't take that 5 incher home for the aquarium (at least not without special permission from the game and fish dept)

Call the game and fish dept just to be sure, and you may even get mixed answers on this depending on who you talk to since some may just assume it to be illegal when asked the questions, so I'd even ask to see it in writing.

A buddy of mine in Ohio had a couple of bass in the basement. It a lot of fun watching them. I'ld give it a shot myself if I had a decent sized aqarium. I've kept bullheads in a 30 gallon pond in our flower bed and its amazing the water conditions that they can survive. No wonder they can infest about any lake.

if you are looking for cool "pan fish" get some piranhas! had 6 but the bigger 4 killed the smaller 2 (that happens) i kept em in a 75G tank and they were as big as my hand...and ferocious too.

one thing to keep in mind is that its recommended to have 1 gallon/inch of fish and that you may need some fairly substantial filtering equipment to keep the watter quality up to  there liking

i did see an aquarium once with a humongous peacock bass living in it. it was really cool but it ate a scoop of big sucker minnows every day

Used to have green sunfish in a tank when I was a kid that I caught out of a creek in my hometown, they were great very aggressive I actually like to get more if my tank wasnt overloaded already. Now I have and oscar a red paucus and a pleco and they are all pigs. Like moose said 1 inch per gal is good but give some leeway, the research i did still gave me numbers much smaller than how big they actually got especially the paucus. It almost really does look like that pic on here of the lady that caught the one at patterson lake. Its like having a frisbee in a 55 gal tank. BTW anyone want a fish? Or anyone really hungry?

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.

I think the rest of your post was correct, but not sure fish at home go against your possesion limit? Is it different than having them in a freezer being they are still alive?

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure anymore either since they adjusted the home and in the freezer rules, but better safe than sorry.

That 1 inch of fish per gallon only applys to small fish (1 to 4 inches)  Try to imagine a 50 inch fish in a 50 gallon tank.  mass and waste amounts begin to exceed length after a few inches.  agression is also a factor.  small mouth bass for example are extremely agressive, but usually the first fish in the tank becomes the dominant one so put least agressive fish in a tank first.

Putting it that way yea ur totally correct, also watch out for those fish that can also be just as tall as they are long.

A long time ago I kept a small baby large mouth bass I caught using a seine getting minnows. Fun to watch him attack the top of the water to eat.  After a bunch of guppy dinners wife made me get rid of him and let him go where I caught him.

I just checked the ND fishing regs and the answer to your question is NO.
Copied from the FAQ's on their site

Can I transport home some small fish I caught from a lake and use them as aquarium fish?
No. It is illegal to transport any fish in water away from the water body from which it was caught, except for legal baitfish.

I used to have 5 perch 3 eyes 4 bluegill and 1 largemouth in a 150 gal tank.  The eyes were 11 to fourteen inches the perch were 6 to 10 inches the gills were 6 to 8 inches and the largemouth was about 2 pounds.  They all got along fine.  One day I put a 6 inch small mouth in the tank and woke up the next morning and all the fish except the small mouth were in the corner.  I ended up having to put the small mouth in his own tank because it wouldnt let the other fish eat it would just keep them herded into the corner

yeah, like I said before smallies are mean territorial lil buggers.  doesn't even matter how much smaller they are, they'll kick the crap out of the other fish in the tank.

I think someone may have hit on this already, but it would be awfully tough to get a fish home to your aquarium nowadays with the ANS rules in place. Remember, no transporting of any water away from the lake exce9t for legal baitfish. Since I assume we are talking about all species other than fatheads, the answer is you would have to get it from a pet store.

Yep I think you guys are right, it sounds like according to the law having fish in the tank is cool however getting them there isnt. A reminder also for guys to take extra special care looking at what they dump out of their minnow traps, you dont need to be using them to get in trouble all you have to do is have and transport fish that arent legal live bait and it could be a ticket.

I love the varieties of fish species one can find in the local bait tanks.  Game and fish act like the minnows are raised in sterile quarantined tanks instead of being trapt from hundreds of sloughs, lakes, and streams from around the state, then mixed together, and then redistributed to anglers a few scoops at a time with a little mix of the water from each slough, lake, and creek they came from, only to be tossed out into the lakes one by one....but still can't keep water on my 5 walleyes till I get home and drain it out in my driveway.

Have I mentioned I think the A.N.S. laws are crap on this site yet?  Its like banning cartoons and funyuns to stop marijuana from crossing our borders.
