I was just wondering if anyone has found a pattern at all to keep little perch off and catch bigger ones. Where i live we have a slough that you have to catch 50 little ones to a jumbo, but there a ton a jumbo's in there the problem is you just cant keep the hook away from the 30 little ones waiting to bite. i have tried big salmo darters and huge sweetish pimples and everything else big and it just doesnt matter. i think the problem is with all the little ones you just dont have the time to convince the bigs ones to bite because the little ones wont leave you alone. on sunday i kept 14 but caught at least 150 in 3 hours. Any advice helps

Those little buggers are voracious.  When I get into a pile of the smaller perch I will pick up and move around the lake looking for the bigger ones.  Sometimes it works to move away from them, sometimes it does not.

I was on a perch lake last weekend and noticed that if I left my bait lay on the bottom of the lake rather than suspend it I had better luck catching the bigger fish, they were able to pick it up and swallow it and I didn't have to deal with the little guys setting off a false alarm.  This was on my dead stick with a jig and a live minnow.

All I got is use a camera to select the ones you want to bite and jerk it out of the way of the ones you dont.

If you can find last weeks issue of "Outdoor News" (its a MN publication), I think there was an article about that very thing.

the best tool for this is a camera. if know the area your fishing, which i think i do(se nodak) theres is a TON of sloughs like this. The best method i have used so far is a cam. you drop  the bait down and you can pull it away from the smaller ones put it from of the big ones faces. its not fool proof but it definately saves on bait.

I've always liked the approach that when the perch school in to raise your bait above them....jig irratically and wait...the bigger perch become more aggressive and as funny as it sounds, use dominace to get what they want....hope it helps

My husband & I have a trip planned to Devil's lake the week of Christmas, we are looking to catch the JUMBO PERCH the lake is famous for, any tips on where to start on the lake and where the danger zones are for early ice? We heard Lake Alice is hitting pretty good, any tips would help our trip. What bait/jigs are they mostly hitting on ( colors)
