this recurring "rumor" is getting a little old and I'm dead set on uncovering it.  I have been told time and time again that there is a buyer out there (in south Dakota) who is paying 8-10 bucks per muskrat.  Now, talking to other buyers and shippers in the state, I do believe this rumor is complete BS and honestly don't know where it got started as this guy would be losing his a$$ paying that much for rats.  In addition, if someone were paying this, he'd be getting business from every buyer, trapper, etc... within a 5 state area including myself as I don't even come close to averaging that.  I have however, heard first count reports of people actually getting this kind of money, however, when it came time to tell me who and where, they "forgot."  So I am offering up a reward.  I want this guy's name and phone number, and preferably where he's based out of.  All info will be held confidential including who gave me the information, should you ask it.  Once I call, verify, sell him some rats and make what people say I "should" be making (8-10 averages), the person who gave me his name and number will be paid $300 (yes that is not a typo, three hundred dollars).  If I get this information within 24 hours of me posting this then I'll up it to $400.  This offer will only be valid until Saturday Dec 17th and I can and will put this in writing upon request.  If I hear nothing then I'm going to assume that this buyer doesn't exist.  Call or email me. (701-307-0170) (brownsheep11@hotmail.com)  thanks.

Im sure for that price they are skinned and stretched.  I heard the same thing but can't remember the name either of the buyer.  It sounded like some guy from a fur buying association or something like that was buying them.

I just sold a bunch to him for $12.50 a piece and I just can't remember his name.  Mine were 50% Albino though.

Tough to get $8-10 averages from a Country Buyer. Especially with Dakota rats, coarse brown fur and thin leather so they say. You could hit $8-10 on individual rats MAYBE.

Groenwold Fur & Wool Co http://www.gfwco.com comes around to SD and they pay up to $10 for Michigan and Wisconsin rats all the time. Again those are NOT Dakota rats but larger heavier silkier and better colored muskrats. http://www.trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2863626/Rat.html#Post2863626

My best this year out of three country buyers was some that got $9, they were XXL rats caught in the first week of Dec. really good winter shearable with good color, almost black guard hairs with clear underfur. And the buyer included color in the grade, most do not anymore.
The day before I sold 45 "narrow larges" for almost $6 average, these were the smallest 20% of rats I caught since Nov 18th. I stretched them on small wood boards so they come out as "Western Larges" 5 7/8" wide at the butt and over 14" long.

Recently I sold to

Schaleben Fur Co

(218) 847-3178

28428 Us Highway 10
Detroit Lakes, MN 56501

If you need to check on that $9 rat.

Even there they recommended I ship the worst of my catch to auction as the prices there couldn't be beat last year. But if the catch is big this year we could see the highest prices paid by Country Buyers and my shipped goods could get held over till next year and then sell for a $2 average. Everyone always quotes last years prices, well that was last year!

I could drive to Wisconsin and go for the $10 sales, but any good fur grader would know I didn't have Wisconsin rats cause I bump up towards the RR valley.

Has Great info to help put Your fur in perspective. Remember a short harvest makes ordinary quality fur worth much more than it normally would bring.

Why are you so worried about other buyers?   No wonder you can afford to pay for info since you pay so little for furs you "buy".  Pay a fair price and you won't have to worry.

im guessing he paid people what they were fairly worth for rats around here.  But if he can make a trip to SD and resell them for double his money on an afternoon trip ....why wouldnt he?!?

Kids back home sold rats they caught recently unskinned in Aberdeen for $5.00 a piece. Never thought to ask where since I do not trap them. Much more fun to run a 55gr hollow point through them!
In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape. Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

$8-$10 for put up 'rats wouldnt be to far fetched, even for a "country" buyer, especially considering how strong they finished last spring, and current market forecasts.

Maybe anticipating a strong spring market and trying to secure a large stockpile, or perhaps he's on a contract  with someone for xxxx number of em.

Not sure if country buyers can participate but maybe he is attempting to fill a lot for one of the fur houses to fill a private treaty?

Don't know who he/she is but they may just be a step ahead of the other country buyers around.  Fur has done some crazy things over the past 35 years so these prices really are not suprising.  And yes, Wisconsin has some of the best rats around!

NAFA Holds First Ever Private Treaty Internet Sale

NAFA’s Private Treaty Internet Sale was met with strong support from the buying community, producing price increases for all Wild Fur varieties offered. China was the dominant buyer with the highlight of the sale being our offering of 63,633 Muskrats which sold 100% at advancing prices compared to the auction held a few days earlier.

When we cancelled our January auction due to insignificant quantities and the low expected buyer attendance, especially from China, we realized this was a perfect opportunity to try a new method of selling. We all know that the price of Ranch Mink has risen dramatically and that an article like Muskrat tends to follow the same price pattern. Therefore, we decided to put together a Private Treaty catalogue and allow buyers to bid on this catalogue over a three-day period. The bidding could be done by fax, email, online through our website or in person. Due to the consistency of our assortments and our descriptions from sale to sale, buyers could bid online with confidence and be assured of the quality of their purchases.

This high tech method of selling allowed NAFA to attract bids from buyers all over the world. We believe we are the only marketing company set up to sell Wild Fur in this cutting edge way. Although others may be critical of our decision to cancel the January Sale, this new and innovative method of selling allowed buyers from all over the world, who would not have attended this sale due to the limited quantities, to submit bids and purchase merchandise.

We are pleased to advise that this internet Private Treaty offering was very well received by the buyers and resulted in excellent demand and clearance, particularly for Muskrat, which sold 100% at a Sect. I average of $7.62.
