my opti had a heart attack the other day! 2008 90 model it ran like a champ for 2 years and not a single hiccup or issue at all.  i only run 87 gas no ethanol crap. was fishing and started it went to take off and all of a sudden no power and rattles and spits and sputters and makes a knocking sound ! pulled the plugs got good suck and blow at the ports. it sounds like a high pitched sewing machine! has no power what so ever goes maybe 5 mph max. idles ok but push the throttle down and it goes nowhere!

where in the bismarck mandan area are the mercury authorized service dealers? i know about valley city and river sports what are the others? isnt there a place in mandan? just looking for options on where to take it and whos the best?  whithout waiting forever to be repaired!  very dissapointed that a two year old motor is having issues already!  anyone who has good advice chime on in!

A friend of mine blew up his 200 hp mercury motor last year and had a new powerhead put on at Blakes Marine in Devils Lake.  They did a nice job but it was spendy.

Sounds a like the Air Pump? Have you pulled the hood and checked the belt? The power head failors on that 200 Opti is not the same issue as being experienced here! I would assume it's still under waranty being an 08'? I wouldn't worry to much however if warranty doesn't cover it those Air pumps aren't cheap!

I had what sounds like the same problem on a Pro XS.  It was a sensor that controls the shifting.  The motor started and idled fine but at around 2000 RPM it would sputter and sound like it was going to die out.  Turns out the sensor thought it was "over reving" and was going into protection mode.  I believe it was a shift position sensor and warranty covered it.  It was an easy fix but had to be done in the shop with the right tools and computer to check it out.  I would think any authorized dealer could do this pretty easily, it'll just be getting it there and waiting to get it back that will take the time.

I should probably start a new thread for this but I hear a lot of good things about the boatworks place but does anyone find them to be impossible to get ahold of?  I suppose I should just drive over there because they never answer the phone or return messages...

It's definitely not the plugs themselves.  The engine is going into "guardian mode" to protect itself, which is why it won't make any RPM's.  You need to get it hooked up to a computer at a Mercury dealer to figure out what the issue is, don't run it again.  If your plugs are fouled out then its likely the air compressor.  If not, the throttle position sensor (TPS), or some other electrical issue is a good bet.  Could be a bad starting battery or battery connection.  Again, let a dealer figure it out.  Mercury SmartCraft gauges (which I highly recommend) would have told you what the issue is and how to resolve it as it happened.

Jim :  sounds like you may be close put her in the lake today just to check again after the plugs and it is in guardian mode it idles like a champ runs rough at trolling speed and knocks, and put the throttle down and it wont go over 3000 rpm and it beeps,  going to the doctor on wed so than they will hook er up and see what the diagnosis is.  I did some internet research and several times i read about people having the same issues with an opti. Ill have to check into them guages!
