Because they are not smart enough to solve crimes. They are just waiting for everybody to forget about it over time. Just like they did with the last one.

+1000. The only thing that the Minot PD appears to be interested in is giving people $10 speeding tickets and other trivial matters.
If you woke up one day and said I would like to find the dumbest 100 people I can. There is no way you could come close to doing as good of a job as every police department does in the united states.
A majority of the arrests made across the nation for felony offenses and narcotics violations are the results of traffic stops. Timothy Mc Veigh is a prime example,... this trivial traffic stop (No Tag) resulted in the arrest and conviction of a homeland terrorist!Maybe you should just be happy that ND's speeding fines are so LOW!
This latest murder is beyond belief. You have a suspect, only one with a motive mind you - and a history of deadly assault....
And you somehow clear him...and release him.
I would be stunned that anyone else committed the murder.
The Minot PD has pretty much ensured there will be NO justice in these latest murders.
As for the other high profile murder. They have guaranteed no justice in that case by their own actions, omissions and incredibly incompetent detectives.. I wont even mention their dismissal of outside assistance that could have solved the case.
I have no problem stating publicly they are beyond incompetent....they are complicit.

I won't argue that alot of inadvertent arrests are made from traffic stops. I also don't give a damn how much speeding fines in ND are, because I've gotten 3 in my entire driving career and 1 in the last 6 years. It was a whopping $10 and it hardly was worth the effort. The point I was trying to make before it gets carried away is that there are other more important matters to focus on, by both the City of Minot and the Minot PD. The growing traffic problem in Minot seems to be swept under the rug as well. The City appears to love to sit idley on their hands while obvious problems loom. What about designating 1-way traffic on certain streets, like other large cities?
Many people around here love to get stirred up when something like a murder occurs because it's relatively uncommon, and the population is low enough that it makes people uncomfortable vs. hearing about murders everyday in much larger metropolitan cities. The difference is that they have a PD that is competent enough to get leads and do some REAL work on a case and actually solve some. I realize that they don't solve them all, but that's to be expected. The Minot PD is 0-2 in the last couple of years in finding ANY relevant information leading to an arrest and conviction of a murderer in a city of 36,000 people. The Chief of Police goes on record saying that the public is not in danger and that this most recent homicide was a premeditated and predictable event. Oh really? If it was so easy to say that, how come it was not prevented? Because you CAN'T make a gaurantee like that, just like you can't predict that it won't happen again. Personally I am not in fear that this person is still running around. It's the principle of the matter that is the issue.
The Minot PD is currently hiring for more police officers. Minot currently has more officers per capita than any other large city in ND. Basic hiring requirements require that applicants have completed a minimum of 60 college credits. I guess all I have to say to that is yikes...
It's a whole string of things that has led to Minot being completely satisified with being complacent. The sheriff's department, the mayor...Minot is full of the "good ol' boys" and I doubt we'll see much of a revolution on that frontier for awhile. To that I also say yikes.
What should the education level be? How many professors are going to strap on a piece and bust up the "O"? For that matter, how many would pass a drug test? Street cops are strapped by politics. Patrolmen don't set the fines for speeding. I'm sure this most recent suspect is/was being protected by PC somewhere in the chain. Anytime a cop asserts authority on video, it's perverted into brutality.
So, I guess y'all are right. The #1 requirement to be a cop IS idiocy.
Whether its incompetence, inability, or downright refusal to get the job done in some of these cases Minot is far from alone when it comes to not solving cases like this.
I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.
Here's an interesting and "relevant" question I was asked on my last speeding ticket in Minot, which occurred in November 2010....
Officer: "Where are you coming from?"
I didn't answer it. Not because I was hiding anything (I was coming home from the movie theater) but because it has nothing to do with the matter at hand.
The only information that the public has on this most recent homicide is what law enforcment released to the media. Should they release every detail of the case and disclose every bit of evidence? The criminal justice system allows only "one crack" at a suspect when it come to swearing out a criminal complaint. The 5th Amendment protects us from double jeopardy. It may be that the Minot Police are waiting for trace evidence, physical evidence, DNA evidince, a witness to decide to talk or whatever before they file charges. It's obvious that their "person of interest" didn't confess or he'd be awaiting trial. Can you imagine the shitstorm if they filed a complaint prematurely only to have evidnce thrown out in a motions hearing. I'm not famialiar with any of the specifics of this case but I guess what I'm saying is don't rush to judgement....I'm sure the Minot detectives and the ND BCI have a good idea what happened but they may be missing or waiting for that last bit of evidence before they swear out a warrant. As far as "clearing" a suspect, what a better way to make that person feel secure in what happened and maybe then he'll let his guard down.
That's fine for both of you. The patrolman can just let you set there and breathe for a while. It's nice to have some rapport and respect on both sides. If you don't want this, don't speak. Don't roll down all your windows at -40 either.
What if a Homicide had just occured on the street you'd just drove down and the officer asked "where are you coming from"? You invoked your first amendment right?! Did you commit the homicide? Are you a person of interest? Did you save your ticket stub?
Two months ago my truck was stolen from in front of my hose in Rochester, mn. I caaled the cops not because they were going to do anything but just in case who ever stole my car killed someone there would be documentation that it was stolen and I did not give them permission to drive my truck. So a cop shows up approx. an hour and a half after it is stolen and the first thing he does is swears. Real freaking professional! He then gives me twenty questions about my driving record. (My driving record has absolutely nothing to do with my truck being stolen. The numb nut that showed up on behalf of Rochesters finest then did not believe me that I never have had a speeding ticket. Which once again has nothing to do with anything. The funniest part is that he is the one that brought up my traffic history, so he saw for himself that I have never been issued any tickets. During the conversation he answers a phone call from his wife and continues to talk to her for three or four minutes while I stand out in the cold. He then begins to tell me that I crashed my car somewhere and I'm just not telling him where it is. Absolutley furious I had some choice words for him before politely asking him to leave. (There was nothing polite about what I told him).
Once he was gone I called the sargent or captain whoever is in charge of a police department and he backed this moron up. Anyways three days later they find my truck about twenty-five miles from my house trashed. They call me, tell me where it is and tell me to go pick it up. About a week later I recieve a phone call from the police department asking if I found out who stole it. They were also wondering if I found anything in the truck that may have belonged to whoever stole it. Don't you think that, that is something they might have checked when they found the truck in the first place.
I have absolutely no respect for any of the lazy idiots. Which is sad! Now, if you're to stupid to do anything else, you become a cop. I would bet my left testicle on the fact that 95% of them have an iq below 20.
Ok guys been a member of this site for yrs. Cannot understand the hatred for leo on this site. This one gets me though so thought I would share some insight. The suspect in the case in Minot envoked his right for a lawyer. It will take some time for the Minot PD to gather enough evidence to convict so everyone just take a breath. You see the trouble with being a cop in any city is that the suspect has more rights than the cop investigating the crime. Unfortunatly it holds up convictions and arrests. You guys that are not in law enforcement need to realize the hold ups we are going up against. I don't want to and can not give out too much info. But those of you that are bashing the minot PD will eat yourwords eventually. However I get that and will accept that. I will apprecate your support for all leo working out there. We are the guys running into situations when everyone is running out, remember that!!!! So before you go bashing a PD or a leo think about what we do or been through! Don't ever wish us gone. Oh and on another note we don't set the fines for speeding $10 is hardly worht our time or the paper we write on, but its what we have to do. Rather than bash leo thank them next time you see them. We work a thankless job and never get a "hey thanks for risking your life everyday" Really I don't want to stir the pot here just want to educated some that hate us.

"What if" nothing happened, other than an irrelevant question was asked? You have to draw the line somewhere. Talk to your lawyer about it, I talked to mine. Giving up irrelevant information doesn't benefit you at all. You can say "what if" a million different ways, so I don't even want to hear about all of the stupid scenarios.
If people want to stand behind the Minot PD and say that they're doing a great job with all of their duties, I only have this to say: read between the lines. This latest murder case is only a drop in the bucket.
