I'm looking into a DPMS AP4. It's basically an M4 carbine. 16" barrel, collapsable stock, removable carry handle, etc. My question is if I want to drop in a bull barrel down the road do I have to replace the whole upper assembly or are the barrels interchangeable? Sorry, I'm really new to AR's.

While not impossible to swap barrels, much easier to have 2nd upper set up and ready.  Pop 2 pins replace the upper and get to shooting.  Optics stay sighted in.

i beleive the barrels and bolts are matched and sould be replaced as an assembly. Someone else should know more. They have a pretty good web site with a lot of FAQ and talk forums. You may want to check it out.   http://www.dpmsinc.com/

Nobody needs an "assualt weapon" according to some on this site like marksimon30.   He says he can give 100 reasons why but wont even list 5.

IF The government was honest.
IF the government was STILL by the people, FOR the people...
we would never need one.... unless a person wants to utilize their rights as an American citizen or just for the shear fact that it's there.... regardless; The folks in Washington don't seem to realize that the folks with firearms aim to make every last one of them keep their promise to support and defend the constitution of the United States.... otherwise, we-the-people have the OBLIGATION to overthrow such government, and start anew.

Another question - If I want to swap a collapsable telescopic buttstock for the fixed buttstock that Scheels insists on putting on all of it's DPMS rifles, is there already a tube inside the fixed buttstock or will I have to order an entire collapsable assembley with the tube, spring, buttstock, etc?

I beleive I read on the DPMS website You will need to replace everything. I wont guarantee it tho. Have you tried contacting DPMS to see if these parts come with the new stock or are  you putting on an after market brand? I like the solid stock myself . It fits me well.

I had an AP4 on order with another place here in Fargo for $1200. A buddy in Bismarck called me yesterday to tell me that Scheels had 6 AP4's in stock for $999 but that they had fixed buttstocks. Scheels corporate made the decision a long time ago that for some stupid reason they weren't going to offer AR's with collapsable stocks. The lasty time they got shipments in with collapsable stocks they ordered a shipment of fixed stocks and swapped them out and resold the collapsable stocks seperately for like $70.

Scheels in Fargo had several AR's in stock this weekend. Even with the blizzard it wouldn't surprise me if they're gone by now.

A fixed stock would be okay for a varmit gun but I'd like a collapsable stock for the tactical AR version. Less weight, more compact, more likely to be illegal before the end of the year.

looks to me like there's already a buffer tube inside the fixed stock:

Update: Ordered a DPMS Pardus collapsable stock with all the necessary parts from DPMS for $63 and free shipping. Seems like a heck of a deal. Now I just need the proper tool to remove the origional buttstock. Before I run off and buy the tool, does anybody have any alternative suggestions?
