No, was about 8 or 10 ounces short of the state record. Will be the new #2 from the sounds of it though. Was either 15 lbs 2 oz or 4 oz... state record is 15lb 12 oz I believe.

Understandable.... but it is still considered the "official" state record walleye... even though it was a "floater". I  think this fish should be the new one, and if a fish is found dead it should not count. but im just a man, and have no say in it. Talk about an amazing fish though. Congrats to the lady who caught it !!

Berg's whopper is the FIRST one in state history at 15 pounds or better to have been officially documented as caught by approved sporting methods

This is the state record. And should be.  I dont understand why they let a fish that was found dead floating on shore be a record.  Even if this one is not going in the book as the record.  What a fish.

i read an articale about this fish, the article said that the night it was caught they weighed it and it weighed 15lb 4oz. then they took it home n froze it because they are having it mounted.  the next day they took it and had it weighed "officially and were told that if they would not have frozen it and had it weighed right away it would probobly have been the new state record.  this is all according to the article that i read, if i can find the link for it i will post it.

Never argue with an idiot.... they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

This would be the perfect time to "right" the state record for walleye.  If not, it should be put up there next  to the record and put an asterick next to the floater....Congrats on the "true" state record catch!!

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

I aggree! This should be the NEW OFFICIAL state record.  Its almost embarrassing that our state has a FLOATER as the state record.  Come on NDGF lets get this right in the books.

My buddy weight this fish for them at 1:30 am and it had already been in their livewell for 2 hrs. Someone should start a petition to get that old floater off the books and this one in as the "official" state record. I would sign it.

It is embarrassing having a floater as a state record.  Its odd the G&F doesn't lay claim to all the state records with all the netting they do during spring spawn.  I'm sure they've caught some bigguns doing that.  And thats just as sporting as picking up a dead fish.

I say to hell with that pot o' gold.

Don't you need to "PROVE" the old record was really a floater first?  What's with people these days?  Everyone's always so eager to jump on any rumor or whatever to bring others down without truly knowing the facts and just automatically believing anything they've heard or read that's negative about someone or something.  Isn't this the same site you all sit and preach about this being a "Christian" nation?  So nice to see you all practice what you preach!!!

I thought it was just plain ND "fact" that the state record walleye was found dead along the shorline of wood lake?  No accusations, no secrets, no rumors.  50 years ago "here, look at this giant dead N bloated walleye I found" "lets make it the state record".  Now it is a FACT that I did not see the dead walleye found, or weighed with my own eyes, so in all actuallity it all could very well be a rumor, so if you know another version of this very well know, and told, north dakota fishermans story, do tell, do tell...

and what the hell does religion have to do with big walleyes?

“There were a lot of speed boats out because of the holiday and we were out trolling when we saw this big walleye floating on the surface,” recalled Blair Chapman, Jr. in the story.
The senior Chapman passed away in 1973, and Blair Jr. was still in high school at the time. The anglers picked up the dead fish to see what it was.
“I remember my dad saying, ‘My God, look at this fish’!”, Jr. related. “It had a big gash along side its head and it was white. I think it had been dead for at least a day.”
The anglers then headed for shore to show the rest of the group gathered for the picnic. Coincidentally, a North Dakota warden was on the scene and saw the commotion.
“As we were looking at the fish, the warden came over and asked us if he could weigh it,” Chapman continued. “We said ‘sure’ and he took off with it, then brought it back to us later. We never thought another thing about it until we learned it had been listed as a state record.”
The warden, Mac Johnson, verified the weight of the fish, then turned the information into department headquarters as the state record. Johnson is deceased, and no one knows his intentions at the time. Perhaps he just wanted to make sure the huge fish was recognized in the state. "

I have to believe the vast majority of people on this site would be in favor of this walleye being the new state record.

The current record is tainted to say the least

I wonder how much weight it lost being it couldnt be weighed right away

I'm with ya'll, but by the time we get this recognized as the new state record some one will have weighed in a 16 or 17lb fish from the same waters...I've been saying it for the last 3 years, its coming and I think this fall it'll get broke.  Either way that fish should have been weighed way sooner than it was.  I have whitnessed first hand a 10.5lb fish lose a full pound just from 5 hours in a live well.

Been saying the same thing plus I am suprised the Red, Darling and Tailrace hasn't already broken it.  Tough to get that mark evidently.

They've been getting bigger every year Tim.  I think we're just about there.  Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if its broke right here in Minot out of the mouse.  an elusive Darling monster could have easily washed down this year.  I know there were several over 10lbs caught in Darling this spring, and I forgot all about the Red river slobs that come out every year.

I'm still gonna have to go with the garrison dam tailrace, after all thats where most state records are broke anyway.  it's unbelievable the amount of food swimming (and floating) around that palce.  when a 21inch walleye weighs 4.3 lbs you can just imagine what a 33" will tip a scale at.
