Brit Sniper Makes Double-Kill at 1.54 miles with .338 Lapua Mag

In a stunning display of marksmanship, and the ultra-long-range capability of the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, a British sniper killed two Taliban machine-gunners at a confirmed range of 1.54 miles. The distance to the target was GPS-ranged at 8,120 feet or 2,706.6 yards — well over a mile and a half. According to Britain’s Times Online, this successful engagement was the longest ever: “The previous record for a sniper kill is 7,972 feet, set by a Canadian soldier [in Afghanistan] in March 2002.” (Canadian Cpl. Rob Furlong used a McMillan Tac 50 in his 2002 engagement.)

The amazing shots were made by Corporal Craig Harrison of the Household Cavalry using an Accuracy International L115A3 rifle, chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum. L115A3 rifles, part of the British Army’s Sniper System Improvement Programme (SSIP), were first deployed to Afghanistan in May 2008. Corporal Harrison, with the assistance of his spotter, Trooper Cliff O’Farrell, dropped two Taliban machine-gunners with successive shots while providing covering fire for an Afghan national army patrol south of Musa Qala last November. Harrison told the Times that: “We saw two insurgents running through [a] courtyard, one in a black dishdasha, one in green. They came forward carrying a PKM machine-gun, set it up and opened fire on the commander’s wagon. I rested the bipod of my weapon on a compound wall and aimed for the gunner firing the machine-gun.” Harrison fired three rounds, the first killing one machine-gunner, the second killing the other (who had taken over the weapon), and a third to disable the enemy gun.

A shot at this ultra-long-range requires a superbly accurate rifle, a highly-skilled marksman, and favorable conditions. Harrison said: “Conditions were perfect, no wind, mild weather, clear visibility.”

Corporal Harrison is a brave soldier. During an ambush later in his Afghan tour of duty, a bullet pierced his helmet but barely missed his skull. Some weeks after that, he broke both arms when a road-side bomb exploded under his vehicle. After recovering from his wounds, Harrison volunteered to return to Afghan duty.

i ain't so sure this stuff should ever be published.  i am all for killing the enemy what ever way possible.  but, i'd be willing to bet making his identity known worldwide w/ a picture and full name puts him and his family somewhere towards the top of a very long taliban hit list.  the chances of anything ever coming of it are slim i am sure.  but, why take that chance?

the other thing i don't like about publishing this type of thing is it gives the enemy info on a platter.  shoot them from a mile and a half and keep quiet about it.  let their friends and comrades wonder WTF just happened.  imho, there is no need to tell them they need to take cover because they risk getting shot from a mile and a half away by someone they can't see.  its kind of akin to using info from intercepted satellite communications to thwart a plan and then telling the whole damn world how we obtained the info.  seems strategically unintelligent to this guy.

We should publish this stuff often.  Make the enemy scared.

Hell, for the life of me I have no idea why our OWN media reports deaths of our own fellow Americans but never puts up a death count of our enemies.  I'd have that on the bottom scroll and updated as often as possible.

i guess that is another way to look at it.  but, i am not so sure they aren't already "scared" outta their minds.  and i'd be more scared if i was sitting next to my friend and watched his head get blown off and had no idea where or from who the bullet came from.  sometimes it just seems to me that we give out to much info on our capabilities.  i'd rather have them scared and stupid than scared and educated.  as far as publishing a death count... that seems fine to this guy.  but, that isn't quite the same as posting the snipers full name, rank and a photo.  and this isn't quite like past wars where everyone will go home and forget about it when we "pull out"  X months or years from now.  we aren't fighting an army w/ regular soldiers who get paid a salary and then get to go home when the war is over.  these SOB's are fighting for something other than a paycheck and they hold grudges for thousands of years.

I personally call bs on him hitting the gun intentionally that is an extremely small target at 2700 yds. How would one even see the gun at that range? I mean his ability to make 3 hits in a row at that distance? Thats just incredible shooting to say the least.

hahahahahaha!!!!!  Hey Edna!

I don’t want to kill the animal, but I do want to warn it, and say “hey, I think you’re pretty neat, but I respect your distance.” There’s bears out here, there’s mountain cougars, and biting goats.

According to the story he saw them running and then say them start shooting an RPK at his commanders wagon. So he saw the gun and the two guys shooting the gun. with a 25 power scope. Like he said "Conditions were perfect, no wind, mild weather, clear visibility." So for him to make that shot was a lot easier than the previous record he broke.

maybe. but the canadian sniper also was shooting a 50bmg across a canyon where he had been shooting at insurgents all day and had become accustomed to shooting 1500 meters . i saw a sniper special on the history channel or military channel about it. either way both shots are amazing.

BUT........the Canadian was not shooting his own ammo, he ran out of his loads and was shooting American loads, they were no where near comprable. The American loads were way hotter, and more accurate, he basicly had to re-learn how to shoot at that distance.
