Thanks hookemup! The only problem I have is when we go up there we camp... BRRRR.. Hopefully we can get there early May maybe or something. Or just maybe get a hotel or something. Its a long way for me about 250 miles to get there. So we usually make a long weekend of it. Yes, I am after the big one. Doesn't have to be huge, just a nice wall hanger. I have been after these guys for 8 years now and caught one 5 pound 4 ounce out of Nelson, but that is it. I live in SE ND and very few lakes have bass around. I did find this slew hole with some promicing numbers/size and will hit it really hard this spring. I will definitely be asking more questions once i get the trip planned. You say find structure, and that has been our problem. I am so one dimentional! (throw a plastic or buzz on shore) I know I need to mix it up! Thanks for the tips! Anything else from anyone is appreciated!

baitcaster: best time? depends on what you want to do? forget about fishing out there at all for at least a week prob more like 2 the lake is very very high now and very dirty thanks to all the runoff. you want a shot a a big one i assume? come in april when it is settled down and back to normal (fish shallow at this time) im sure the input of all this cold runoff water has put em off for a while as far as spawning goes. the fall is when i catch my biggest fish out there OCT NOV time frame. but you can catch a big bass there just about every time you go if ya know where to go and how to do it. as for sheer numbers well it is a fish factory and you can catch large quantities just about any time out there. u want a big one think structure other than the usual bank pounding get away from the banks unless u wanna catch 2-3 pounders all day long look for stuff on your fishfinder and go deep and use appropriate sized baits! see ya out there!

Well let's hope they keep it high for once, but I think its wishful thinking! i know its used for the plant, but wish they could realize how good it would be for our fishing! Sorry selfish. I have seen some lakes flood that have produces unbelelievable fishing the next couple of years. Just wish this could be one, but understand why it isn't too I guess. So when is the best time to get to this lake? We usually take a trip in early June, but thinking we should get there earlier. What you think?

That would be something to see. We camp on the way west end where the crick meets the lake every year. We like to fish that crick, but usually there sin't enough water in it. It would be neat to see the water that high! Even took our boats one yar up to the golf course bridge. Caught a northern about 50 feet from there once. Hopefully the water can stay there until early June when we get up there!

Well at least now there will be some water in there to fish for a while! That lake is always low.

fishing is gonna be useless for a while the square butte creek that flows into nelson broke the ice yesterday and is flowing like crazy, the lake has risen around 3 feet overnight and it looks like a giant bowl of chocolate syrup! and getting worse by the minute. good for later on when the water clears up but for now it is no good.

Stop out at Johns Food Center in Lincoln if you want to see a few Largemouths from Nelson that are close to the 8 lb. range. Talked to John today about them and he said 2 of them were within 5 oz of breaking the state record. Hogs to say the least.

well to clear up the argument, i looked it up. according to the articles i read, males are very unlikely to reach over 5 pounds.
heres the biology on the largemouth bass http://aqua.ucdavis.edu/dbweb/outreach/aqua/200FS.PDF i think the spawning varies in nelson because bass spawn from 65 to 70 degree water. a bass may be able to spawn out on the flats around the discharge by now because the last time i was out there the water was around 70 where the water comes out. |

wow bassmaster your blasting me over wether a fish was a male or female? if it was a female than it had no eggs and the 50 other bass i caught had eggs? its too early yet for the spawn so how do you explain that?
