I grew up about 2 miles from the lake. if you get a ND map find Center, ND (about 40 miles NW of Bis/Man) the lake is 2 miles east and about 4 miles south of Center. If you see the power plant that uses the lake to cool the turbines you are close. the water temp on friday was 53. like i said bigger boats have to put in on the east side but the better fishing is on the west end of the lake. from shore you will want to fish were the hot water channel enters the lake.

Had the skeeter out on friday. feels real good to drop the hammer on open water. spent 4 hours out there and got about a dozen bass and a couple crappies. almost all the fish came on the slower retrieves. nothing on cranks. 2 or 3 on spinnerbaits. that open water is more fun then the ice. bigger boats have to put in on the east side and weasel through the shallow water.

went bassing today at nelson. Me and a buddy caught and released 16 bass, couple crappies and a couple gills. Caught most of my bass on a rattle trap, craps and gills came on a jig and float with minnows. Felt good to set the hook on some of those bass, oh yeah caught a couple on some poppers. Water is way down. Good luck.

Nelson Lake - Tuesday, January 3, 2006
If you want ot get young kids into alot of open water action go to the warm water discharge, on the West end of Nelson Lake. Put a small piece of worm on a small hook 3-4' below a float, keep it within 15' of shore. I took my 6 year old son out twice in the last few days, for 45 minutes each time. Caught over 60 bluegills, 9 crappie and several bass. Some of them were good sized. It is a fish-a-minute, if not faster. Get a kid hooked on fishing! Please practice catch-and-release, they don't taste very good. Bring a camera and take pictures by the water. Their smile is the best thing you can take home!

Nelson Lake - Wednesday, December 21, 2005
Has anyone been out here at all lately? I went about 3 or 4 weeks ago and landed 6 bass. Fished from shore because of the wind. None had any size to them all. Its been my experiance that you have to get off shore if you want to catch any size to them.
Last winter I C&R a 5lb largemouth...still need to send the C&R card in haha. Good luck guys |

We are heading up to Nelson on the 26th of August, but it is a very far drive. Could anyone out there tell me how the lake level is? I would hate to drive 300 miles to see it low. Thanks any info would help on fishing too.

Nelson Lake - Saturday, July 30, 2005
Fished out at Nelson Fri., from about 3:00-6:00PM. Caught a 14"
bass, and about 10 very nice bluegill (10-12") from shore. Had to pound them up out of the rocks along the face of the dam. The fish were there, if you wanted to work for 'em. The fish seemed in a generally negative mood, and wouldn't move far to take anything. Basically, if you weren't snagging rock every other cast, you wouldn't catch anything. Still, it was plenty fun! :-) Todd |

the bass in nelson have most likely already spawned, from past experience its usually the end of march and in april. only went out there once this year over spring break in mid march but the water was so low all the best spots were un-fishable.

went out thursday water is up about 2 feet or more. caught one small bass on a fly rod otherwise nothing LOTS of carp if anyone bowfishes u will have some fun. You can cast from shore and pretty much hit them with your lure. Does anyone know when the bass start to spawn I thought it would be pretty soon there with the water temp being so warm but nothing yet.
