Hey guys, I'm looking for helpful input on some lakes around the minot area.  I moved to minot this past winter and wasn't able to make it out fishing this winter because of the snow.  Anyways my girlfriend wants to go fishing but she's never gone before and me being new to minot I have no clue of which lakes to try.  I don't really care what type of fish we catch just something that keeps her busy and occupied so hopefully she'll want to go again.  Also I drive a small car so there will have to be decent roads to get to the lake.  Any help is really appreciated!  Thanks guys, not looking for any hot spots just a decent lake!

just  a quick thought but if you're just looking to catch some fish you might try the fairgrouds pond on the state fairgrounds on east burdick.  catchable size fish should be in there, check the nd game and fish webpage to see if they have recently stocked it.

If your just looking to get her hooked on fishing and you don't really care about what you catch just go down to the river in town sit right below any of the dams with a minnow and a bobber and you will catch bull heads till your arms are tired of realing them in.

I would try Velva Sportsmans pond for trout or bass and Makoti lake for all the northerns you can handle.  Velva has a little gravel but it is always kept in good shape and Makoti is pavement all the way.

Remember, lake Sakakawea is only a 40 minute drive south on hwy 83.  lots of bays that are good to shore fish there on the north side of the lake.  Best if you wait a couple more weeks though. the fishing isn't all that great right now.  try centennial bay, steinke bay, fort stevenson douglas bay etc.  just drive south on 83 then turn right at the garrison turn and then turn left whenever you see a sign that says what bay that road leads to.

A basic sure fire rig from shore on sakakawea is a typical lindy with a minnow.  tie on a size 6 to a 10 hook with a sliding egg sinker 2-4 feet above it, put a minnow on, cast out, put rod in the holder, and wait.  While you're waiting, try casting various sized/colored jigs and minnows.

80 miles from Minot is Smishek Lake. 3 miles north west of Powers Lake. Tons of perch and blue gills, with the occasional northern and some walleye. Fast action on the perch and bluegill off of worms you dig in your backyard. Grab a tent and head up for a weekend. You won't be disappointed! We go there with the nephews and nieces to enjoy the fast action. They might be small, but they are sure a great time!

I was unaware of  Velva's Sportsmans Pond. Is it Rainbow Trout they stock in it? If so, are they  fair sized?

There are rainbows, browns, and largemouth bass in Velva the biggest we have caught is about 5 pounds.  the largemouth are about 3 pounds average.  another place you might want to try is Glenburn  pond there are nice crappies and catfish up to 10lbs.  The pond is straight north of the school in Glenburn.

I once took a newbie out fishing at her request. Seems she wasn't so much interested in fishing as she was in me. Later she talked me into marrying her. (At least that's the way I tell it.) It'll be 28 years in August. Maybe you will have as much luck as I did.
