The Total Outdoor Network (TON) is proud to announce Kirsch’s Outdoor Products immediate release of NDTRAX 2009NDTRAX is a complete North Dakota Sportsman GPS map. It will aid sportsmen and women in many outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, hiking, horseback riding, camping, and traveling.

“There is no other GPS map in existence that covers the needs of North Dakota or even upper Midwest sportsmen and women. This GPS map provides instant satisfaction…no ifs, ands or buts about it,” says Tim Sandstrom, General Manager of Fishing Buddy Outdoors.

Kirsch’s Outdoor Products based in Fargo, ND has been creating GPS maps and related products since 2001. Being an avid outdoorsman himself, owner Korey Kirschenmann understood a void kept sportsmen from truly embracing the power of handheld and other GPS technologies already available to them. “I wanted to bridge the gap for myself but quickly realized that there are many others looking for the same bridge. There are a few companies creating lake contour maps, and a few others creating road maps. NDTRAX puts it all together adding surveyed lake contours, PLOTS land, Waterfowl Product Areas (WPAs), Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), Grasslands, and other hunting, and outdoor recreation data all on one mapping card.” said Korey.
PLOTS, Grasslands & More!
The retail price of NDTRAX 2009 is $79.99 and covers the entire state of North Dakota. Yearly updates are planned for a low cost of $20. “Customers can keep the 2009 version forever or update at any time. My company works very closely with the North Dakota Game and Fish. They update lakes and PLOTS land and other detail yearly, so I want to make sure sportsmen have the most current information if they wish to update,” said Kirschenmann.

To load the maps, simply insert the memory card (SD and microSD) into a mapping compatible Lowrance or Garmin GPS and the maps appear real time as you walk, run, ride, or drive across North Dakota. Want to hunt the Grasslands in Western North Dakota and know if you are in the Grasslands, on private land or in Theodore Roosevelt National Park? Want to know where the next 20 foot point is on a fishing lake? Want to know where the nearest PLOTS land is located from your current location? These are just a few examples of questions easily answered using NDTRAX

“Some people describe NDTRAX as the North Dakota Game and Fish PLOTS book on your GPS,” said Kirschenmann. “It is so much more because of the additional data such as lake data included with NDTRAX . The Surveyed Lake Contours!other key thing is you know exactly where you are so you aren’t guessing if this is the unit shown on the map or not.”
The feature list for NDTRAX 2009 includes 157 lake contour maps, 357 boat ramps, 4,777 PLOT, 1,418 WPA, 345 Grassland, 424 WMA, 1,750 BLM and ACOE units, 4,883 ND State Lands, 79 National Wildlife Refuge, 20 State Park, 32 State Forest, 10 National Park, and 39 Big Game units. In addition, the map includes hiking trails, cities, county roads, highways and more.

A Minnesota version, MNTRAX 2009, and Montana version, MTTRAX 2009, are also available. More information and/or purchasing information about these great products visit Kirsch’s Outdoor Products web site (http://www.koutdoorproducts.com).

Allen,

I greatly appreciate the kind words and am very happy to hear about your satisfaction with the product and the service. Just an FYI for you and any other Fishing Buddy folks, I have recently put out an update to the NDTRAX 2009 product. I added an additional 4,000 state lands units,  some trails in the Badlands such as the Maah Daah Hey Trail, and some BLM and Army Corp land as well. There is no charge for this update if you purchased before June 1, 2009. All the new NDTRAX 2009 cards will include these changes as well.

Simply send your card back to me in a bubble mailer, with a return address and I will update the card and send it back for no additional fee.  Going forward all updates are planned to made available yearly for $20. There is no requirement to update but to get the most recent data, it is recommended.

Korey has been nothing but great to work with.  I am a fellow custom mapper (not the MapCreate junk).  He and I shared some ideas and instantly, Korey threw them into his NDTRAX.  That is something you don't often find.

I have enjoyed my own custom maps for a few years.  Now that Korey is hard at it I don't have to build my own!  Perfect!

I have to ask, how many of you use Lowrance or Garmin handhelds for ice fishing, for hunting, for horse back riding, to staking out your yard or property??  They are invaluable tools for each (maybe not so much for staking out property but they get a guy in the ball park).  I have become addicted to mine and for that reason, needed more than the normal junk they come pre-loaded with.

Now, how many of you use the boat units?  Same thing.  Basically, the only lakes in North Dakota that has surveyed contours available for GPS units is Lake Sakakawea and Devils Lake.  There are over 150 lakes in North Dakota surveyed but unavailable for GPS units...until now.  The cat is out of the bag.  Take a look at NDTRAX.  Not a sales pitch, it is a favor.  I'm serious, as a mapper myself, I can say you will be very VERY pleased.

So has he thought about the next step?  Incorporating this good info into a  computer based program like MapCreate.  I spend more time messing with my icons/wavepoints/etcc..  on my laptop than in my GPS.  A lot of work would need to be done involving encryption/programming but would be awesome.  The possibilities are endless!!  Any compter programmers out there???  I look forward to seeing what these maps look like in my GPS.  My  Montana one is pretty sweet and proved priceless last trip out thanks to ole Timmers!!

It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

That's actually a good question.  I know what you mean that for most people they don't have fancy computer software that they can do their own mapping.  The only thing out there really is MapCreate.  I don't know what Garmin has for their units since I haven't used on other than for simple GPS things.  Simply put, MapCreate is not worth a dime (in my opinion anyway).  I wish I never would have bought it.  But will Korey get software going like that?  That might be an expensive proposition.  That means you people need to buy his products so he can get some capital flowing!  Ha!

Korey can give some suggestions, however, on other software.  Global Mapper and TopoGrafix Easy GPS & Expert GPS are two I have used to utilize routes and waypoints.  They are much more friendly with the data but they kinda lack the background stuff.  Although, with more playing, a person can get versed.

But trust me, time, time, time and more time goes into tinkering with this.  As a custom mapper simply buying Korey's product and getting the measly $20 update is more than worth the effort I had to take.  Still might do some special things with my maps but Korey pretty much covers everything I ever did with my maps.

Actually, this isn't thinking about the next step as much as a previous step. For almost 10 years, I have put out a program called Lake Trax. This program was lake orientated and was both a PC and GPS integrated solution. It allowed real-time communication to the GPS, so you could use your GPS and laptop together and actually see your progress on the screen, print maps from the computer, send and receive waypoints and tracks to and from the GPS, measure distances, mark waypoints and tracks, catalog all of this etc. 99% of the sportsman who used my LakeTrax product used the map chip only and all the extra work by me to include the advanced computer integration confused more people than anything and generated lots of support. So, for the good of the majority of my customers, I was able to drop prices significantly and offer a very easy to use program designed for just about everyone not needing PC integration.

If you are looking for good program to allow uploading tracks, waypoints, and pull this form a computer, OziExplorer is good as well. This does not upload any type of map to the unit. Even Ozi, is not for the faint of heart.

I appreciate the feedback and suggestion.

Man, that would be sweet to be able to sync a boat unit to the laptop and add/edit wavepoints/icons in a real-time fashion instead of having to save them on a chip and load the data.  I have gone as far as buying a cigarette power cable to be able to use my X-27 and 334 to keep them updated over the course of the winter when the boat is in storage.  I used my 334 last year out in Montana and the bigger screen was a godsend.  I'll have to check out this OziExplorer you mention.

I just want to be clear on Ozi, from what I understand, it still requires you to load to chip and pull up into Ozi for Lowrance units. Ozi allows you to store that on your computer.

However, if you had a calibrated map of the area you where in, and if a NMEA compatible GPS was connected to OZI, you would see the navigation of your GPS on the PC map. Bottom line is without a calibrated map viewable in Ozi Explorer, most of it's features will not help. My older program gave the perception of more integration because the exact same map that was on the GPS was also in OziExplorer. FYI, direct integration or sending and pulling of waypoints and tracks DOES work in OZI on Garmin and other brands, just not Lowrance as Lowrance integration is via .usr files and the upload/download process.

Many engineering firms, contractors, etc are going to the laptop and a GPS receiver.  Many run ESRI's ArcView.  Here they have the storage to have high resolution aerial photography or images.  While they drive along in their vehicles they can turn on and off just about any layer you could imagine.  I highly expect this trend to continue to the boat where units will be much more sophisticated and offer similar results.  The issue of course is water.  Water ruins electronics and although many of the field laptops are equipped to handle the dust and shock of bumpy roads, etc they aren't bulletproof with water.

Really, to get hooked up with a system similar to what Korey is talking about isn't overly expensive.  Most of us have laptops now a days so the purchase of a GPS receiver and lower end GIS type software is all that is needed.  Some of it gets spendy though if you want the better of the better.

I actually haven't heard of OZI.  Well, let me re-state that, I saw glimpses of it but I went with the trial versions in the TopoGrafix because I was too cheap!  I got everything done with my waypoints, etc that I didn't need the full blown version!  Ha!

But yes, something PC oriented would be nice.  Oh toys, toys and more toys.

Hey folks, Korey is going to be on KFGO with Joel Heitkamp Friday from 10 am to 10:30 am.  I couldn't be more sincere in telling you to tune in as you will get a first hand conversation on what this product is.  Sometimes it is difficult to grasp a product or concept but this half hour question and answer session will cure that.

Don't stutter too much Korey!

Oh and say hi to Joel!

Thanks for the PR plug Tim. I will try not to stutter. I am typically better live on stage doing presentations but have never done a radio show before. This will be a new experience.
