ND Whopper club (why only one entry per specie per person?)

The ND whopper club is used as one of many tools for our Game & Fish Dept. to gather information about how well species of fish are doing in bodies of water throughout the state.  So why is it you can only send in one whopper club application per specie?  wouldn't the game & fish still want to know if a whopper fish is caught, regardless of how many a particular angler has sent in before?

See deer tag forum.  They already have a load of information and statistics...I guess.

But on that note, are we really limited?  I thought you could you just didn't get recognized with a patch and all that jazz.

I dont know about that, but for several species, it would be nice to see the size increased some, maybe make a new Super Whopper Club or something. Whopper walleye and pike are a dime a dozen these days....

it says right on the "green card" applications at the gas stations, something to the effect of "I hereby verify that this is the only time I have applied for a whopper clup entry for this species"  signed ___________

recognition aside, does the game & fish still want to know when and where a whopper fish is caught?

I guess I always looked at the whopper club as a fun courtesy by the g&f, never even thought of it as a info gathering tool. I would think they would like to know where the big fish are being caugh, but I guess its not much of a concern, they dont have a whopper club here in MT, I have seen a couple "clubs" in MT but they aren't G & F related.

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.

And by "fun courtesy" I meant incentive to get out there and spend some money.

I think they get way more info from their electroshocking and netting as to the health of each fishery than they do the whopper club.

I'm pretty sure the whopper club is more of just something set up for fun.

Well it is pretty simple actualy some people live and die by the glory that a piece of paper will bring them. Take Nelson for example it used to be teaming with tons of big bass but than everyone had to go and catch and keep a whopper bass so they could mount it and or get there name in the paper and now there are very few big ones left.
G&F also recognizes catch and release  why not snap a pic let em go? they taste like crap anyways.

Take any good perch lake or slew word gets out and bam within weeks it is whiped out and the paper is chock full of whoppers,  The river is teeming with whopper walleyes if ya fish it enuff you undoubtably will catch one sooner or later.  Fishing is good no doubt about that on many diff waters in ND right now. species like Salmon go ahead keep every whopper ya catch they die anyways so no harm. Species like a big trout that is prob gonna be a once in a lifetime fish for most.  A big pike in a few years the big lake will prob be chock full of them they certainly are abundant everywhere and do warrant thinning out some.

I have nothing against somebody keeping a whopper.  For some it is a once in a lifetime catch for others it happens all the time no need to be greedy once you have had the thrill there is no need to repeat it 50 times so  we as sporstman and women must also think about the future.  just my thoughts so let the bashing begin!

I think it is a 'fun' thing too.

For the record.

Same here.

On a side note, I think they did away with the multiple entries for a species in the whopper club to help people not keep and kill the whoppers.  No reason to keep a 9 or 10 lb walleye for a patch if you already have one, unless you just want to eat it or adorn the wall with a fish.

FWIW, the only whopper club patch I have ever received is for paddlefish, and I have received a couple of them through the years before the rule was put in place.

There may have also been some concern about people illegally spearing, netting, and snagging spawning fish to boost their whopper club entries.  A lot of them back in the 80s came from from people using suspicious techniques in the New Town area.  A few got busted, next thing you know the rules changed.  So not as much incentive there either to use illegal means to get your name in the paper.

I would have to agree with your last statement, and really most of your comment. I never really understood the big thrill, its like when you are in the bar and some joker next to you has to brag about how awesome he was in highschool football...whoppie for him.

Actually, the whopper club was intended for kids, to get them interested and keep them fishing.  Howeve,r the 10 year old adults couldn't get enough pattin themselves on the back, and it cost to much to keep sending them patches, so restrictions were put in place.  The information gathered isn't really that useful.

I can set up a "whopper club".  I will get some patches made and a editable PDF file for certificates.  Send me the info on where, when, how, and what you caught.

It is to keep people from killing every big fish they catch. Which is a good thing. That is why you can catch unlimited "Catch and Release" whoppers. I doubt the G&F pays much attention to the whopper listings. Most people that catch a whopper don't send in for the patch anyway.

One whopper per species is the way it should be, Another smart move on the G&F's part. See, they are a little smarter than you all think.

I personally would like to see tighter regulations on our fisheries. Walleye limit 4

Interesting artice, but doesn't say why only one entry per person.  It does however say it benefits fishery data and management on the lower paragraph of the second page.

Gotta be player haters in every bunch.  This is the same type that asks me two different questions in two different places.  When I'm on shore throwing walleye after walleye back in the lake "hey, why aren't you keeping those?" and then at the cleaning station "hey, why'd you keep all those?" to which my answers are "because I can, and I'm not hungry", and "because I can, and I am hungry" on this note lets not hijack this simple question thread into an opinionated, slot, C&R, ethics thread

and the Game & fish would beg to differ that the information gathered on this program is useless.

I started this thread out of curiousity to see if one could answer the question, not because I have 20 of your 9lb walleyes in my freezer that I took out of your lake.

Thanks for the attempted answer anyway timbuk

And I hope they keep doing it, thats what the pics section is for. I can look at pics of outdoors people doing what they love all day especially when I cant get out that day. Gets me even more excited for the next time I can get out.

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.
