ND Highway Patrol seeking troopers in western North Dakota

The North Dakota State Highway Patrol is looking for some new recruits to head west. Today was the last day people could apply for state patrol openings in a special fast track training program. Four troopers are being hired for the oil patch. A surge in the number of trucks and traffic out west is forcing the State Patrol to increase a trooper presence there.

Lt. Bryan Niewind – ND State Patrol: “It is a 24 week course, they are going to pare it down to 19 weeks and get those trooopers as fast as we can.”

The legislature approved the proposal for the 4 troopers as part of a disaster relief bill. The state patrol will also be filling four vacancies left open by retirement.

Two totally different entities and how they are funded and approved is also totally different. Adding HP takes a lot more time unfortunately.  Not enough people are hollering to their Representatives to get more HP out there.

The state extended the application deadline to December 9th so its not too late to apply.

I talked to an officer that said most of the time when he sees someone in violation he doesnt dare turn around without getting run over.  He also said he wasn't pulling anyone over without backup anymore do to everyone carrying guns.  Ive noticed even here around Riverdale and Washburn on 83 they hardly pull a car over without  help.

So are these people carrying guns doing it legally?  They must be because I never read about any gun related arrests by the HP.  So if they're legally carrying then obviously they're behaving themselves. So I don't see what the problem is.

the few I've seen with someone pulled over out here hasn't had backup either. there are a hell of alot more dangerous areas of the country where they don't use backup.  so I'm guessing there isn't any merit to that

Until something happens and then its too late.  I have been very critical of police officers on here before but highway patrol officers have more guts than I do.  It takes courage to stop a car on a dark highway when no one else is around.  F that.

I agree, but ND is still one of the safest states to do that line of work in.  But that's going to change in the next few years.

Didnt mean that they are related in any way other than they are both law enforcement, what I meant is law enforcement in general is very under manned out here and I hope there are some applicants willing to take on the challenge.

I think they need to triple that job order. Never enough when you need them, then when you dont there seems to be to many...lol
