Am I missing something.  I thought I read in this weekends paper that the souix name and logo were going to be kept for the 2011-2012 season, while the states new legislation and NCAA figure things out.

UPDATE: NCAA sticking to 2007 agreement; UND will face penalties for continuing use of Fighting Sioux nickname, logo

http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/200779/

However, the NCAA seemed to think it was ok to sell UND Fighting Sioux clothing during the frozen four, go figure.

You guys need to read between the lines and think about what is really behind the moves people make.  Things are not always what they seem.

The announcement you saw was made by the Chancellor in conjunction with the SBoHE and UND leadership.  The intention was to send a clear signal to the NCAA that it is the intention of the school to violate the terms of the Settlement Agreement.  They did it to draw immediate reaction from the NCAA to put the school back on the sanctions list.

Why?  The simple answer is that now the ball is back in the court of Al Carlson and the Legislature.  This moves things along with regard to testing the Law just passed, the binding effect of the Settlement, etc.

BTW, the NCAA had no choice but to sell Sioux logo apparel.  To do otherwise would have been treating the school in a negative manner and would have been a breach of the Settlement Agreement by the NCAA.  No hypocrisy there, just following the agreement they had with the School and the State.

Change the nickname to Warriors and keep the logo or change it slightly and be done with it.

there's going to be so many new developments in the next year it'll be crazy.  It's just going to have to play out in the court system.

If UND drops down and out of the NCAA, are the pro teams gonna stop looking at our program? If they don't stop looking, then the talent will still be here. I say keep the name and screw the NCAA.

The NCAA will not allow them to participate in any playoff/post season events if they still have the name.  So keeping it another year is not going to be a good thing.  I don't want to see it changed but it is inevitable. They should have just done it and be done with it.

The Fighting Sioux will "not" be banned from participating in tournaments or post-season play.  Under the current arrangement they just can't host playoff games or wear their name and/or logo during these post-season events.  They will still be able to contend for championships.

Stitz, I'm thinking you are mistaken.  The NCAA will not allow any "Home" play off games.  I don't think hockey ever gets any playoff games anyway because the venue is too small.  So it will not affect that sport however all the others could be affected some day if they ever start to be competitive.
They also will not get to wear any uniforms with Sioux logo.

Al Carlson is a Fargo Legislator and a self described Bison fan.  I don't think his intent was ever to save the nickname.  Since day 1 it has been a power play to get rid of the SBoHE and his Bill to do that failed.  Now he's stuck with the promises he made regarding THIS issue.

Wayne Stenehjem and Gran Shaft are good attorneys who have battled this out with the NCAA and worked out a settlement to buy time to get approval from the Tribes.  Carlson and his cronies basically called Stenehjem and Shaft idiots and proclaimed that they could get it done.

Time to deliver on the promises now there Carlson.  Rest assured that Wayne Stenehjem and Shaft and Goetz and Kelley and Faison and others are going to make sure this hot potato gets dropped back in your lap.  The people who backed you up are going to expect you to deliver.

BTW, the NCAA is standing behind a legally enforceable agreement AND Judge Jahnke's dismissal "with prejudice" of any claims that the State might make against the NCAA regarding their NA imagery policy.  Will they negotiate?  Maybe but unlikely since it opens up too many other issues so way easier to take a hard line and not bend.

FWIW, all the talk of keeping the nickname and accepting the NCAA sanctions is moot.  The UND athletic department cannot function under that scenario.  Hockey could but the other sports can't.  The Big Sky has already hinted big time that they are not interested in one of their schools being ineligible to host a football playoff game (the main Big Sky sport).  Do not be surprised if a more direct statement is issued by the end of June on that (their Presidents meet in June).

This is a very interesting demonstration of power politics for anybody interested in that kind of stuff.  The rub is that it is about an issue that many people hold very dear.

Talking to people on standing rock on a daily basis they want und to keep the name.  It is the politicians that wont let it come to a vote.  Every week a group from standing rock runs a add in mobridge paper for a petion to take this to a vote.  If UND would have greased the right palms it would have never came to this.  It is all about money bottom line.

I disagree, Grant Shaft may be a good attorney but he is a lousy politician.  The people of Grand Forks want to fight the NCAA, they want to keep the name,  it is his responsibility as a representative of the people of Grand Forks to represent them.  He is no better than the tribal council at Standing Rock.  They also think they know better than the people they represent.  That is a dictatorship by committee.  And Mr Shaft is just as guilty.
