Hello ladys and gents! Its been a busy fall for me with waterfowl, antelope hunting and some archery mixed in, that its my greatest pleasure to bring you a little story behind mine and Enslows antelope hunt in the great state of Montana.

I started out wanting to hunt Montana for quite a few years and for many species at that, however it didn't unfold until I met a gracious FBOer to persuade me to coming west for a little rendevous.  The guys name is Romulus, A.K.A. huntoomuch... and trust me, he does do it all too often.  I've met many of fellas and fellas have met me off this site, but when all plans unfold to get together it can be a real plethera of happiness. Robbie is a forever friend and a great buddy from here on out!  He's a model Montanyan! :)

I first met Robbie (hunttomuch) in person last year over Christmas time in Bismarck.  Sassy Sam is from there and Robbies folks now live there. After B.S.ing quite a bit over the years Robbie and Nikki decided it was time for them to meet the ultimate BIG J at the Grizzleys Tavern there in the Ol'Bismarck Mall. :)   We chatted a bit and I told Robbie he had a hot wife and that I like antelope, so he said, "You should come out and hang with my wife and keep her busy during antelope season."    Heh Heh Heh. (Sam thats a joke, your way hawwwter!)  Really folks, he talked me into applying cause the folks that know me on here, know that I really, really, really, really, love antelope and how they unfold into the midwest way of life.  Long story short we left the pub as good friends and I went on and applied to Montana for an antelope tag. Much to my disliking, I invited Enslow to join me.  (Kidding folks, he's much more acceptable when you meet him in person, just greet him with a windsor coke and you wont have any worrries).  Okay, tags in the mail, we drew!  Now its time to get ready for a shit show.....

Enslow and I now have 11 days off and 850 miles one way to sing and dance. The trip ended up being right at 3,000 miles round trip and I loved every penny of it from the rolling barley fields to the scenery of the yucky Rocky Mountains.

My buck ended up coming pretty easy on the hunt.  It was a long walk, dont get me wrong, it was just easy that I mean we found a great shooter on day one of the hunt.  Enslow, hunttoomuch and myself got a late start that Saturday and thats fine cause busch light needs supporters.  All three of us went on the hunt and came back with a trophy the first night.   Enslow and Robbie spotted a great buck on State land that butted up to a few miles of BLM.  They bickered a bit about how they should go about it and I said, "Boys, if hes big enough lets get our asses out of the truck and whack em."  Thats all it took and we were afoot in the great land of Montana for the first time.  We worked a few smaller rivines along a cattle pasture and had to double back about three times.  Me and Robbie were getting after it pretty hard and Enslow was kind of doing a dog leg to the right, trying to lose us. :)   Anyway, this is a good buck and I told Enslow before we left Fargo, that we will Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who shoots... Well around the bend, and around the bend, and around the next bend we go..... He wins the RPS, game.  We ended up spooking the antelope a bit and they moved farther off to the NE than we had planned for... And after many foot steps of tracking back into the prairie, we see him.  Robbie is 50 yards ahead of me and Enslow is tsill doing his dog leg left a couple hundred yards behind.  It ended up being a rush shot after putting the bipods down on the 22-250 and missed him at about 300 yards.  After that Enslow took one shot and the buck crested the hill where he had about 15 does.  Robbie and I did a little jog over the next 300 yards or so as we didn't think we spooked him much at all... well, Enslow thought that that the hunt was done, so he just slowly followed...  Robbie and I roll up over the hill and just as we had hoped the heard was still there. The dandy buck I shot ended up running a doe right at us up to 175 yards and closed the distance.  After that it was a true trophy for me and one of my greatest memories.

Below is my antelope and Enslows.  He can share his story below on his hunt. I hope you all enjoy

A classic Big J statement.

Great story and a great antelope.

Can't do any writes ups today.  Im hungover after spending a small fortune on crown cokes and strippers last night in Sioux Falls.  The strippers were required to wear nipple covers.  What is this world coming to?

Well what a time that hunt was.  Never a dull moment.  he is a LONg list of things I remember about the week.

The get into town at 1 am opening morning.  No one can sleep as the house is filled with excitment.  As the sun is rising on opening day we decide that maybe some sleep would do the body good!!!

We woke up Nikki as she thought there was a burgler in the house looking at my sheep mount with flash lights.  Wait as Enslow says Mountain sheep.  Nikki sees it is us and then becomes worried as I say to Enslow "It's ok Mathew you can touch it".... The sheep horns people not me!

At 1030 am opening day I see Big J has his hunting shoes on.  Yes Tennis shoes.  Sizing him up and looking over his physical condition I make the 1st mistake of the week and go with shoes too.  Leason learned.  Shoes DO NOT stop cactus!!!!!

Big J's hunt was a cool spot and stalk and a damn long walk.  A true public land antelope.  I had seen that buck once archery hunting.  It was all we had hoped for.

Big J stayed up late that night.  How late you ask?????  Well lets just say I got up at 430am to shower and go bow hunting deer and as I was leaving he was trying to make his way into the house.  Thank God he didn't fall as I would have had no way to lift him.  He didn't do much the next 24 hours.

I have to give it to Enslow.  After the weekend was over I didn't hunt with them.  I just pointed out the front door and said go that way.  They hit it hard.  Many miles.  And Enslow killed a giant.  All on there own.

Now the night of Enslows kill things got western!!!!  Nikki and Enslow had to mace Big J twice.  We kept the death shed rock late into the night with Nikki running music.  Friends and even one of Nikkis relatives showed up.  Fun times were had.

Some things I took from this hunt
1st  If you get the chance to meet Enslow then Adam Sandler is a must!!!!!  'I made you some sandwhiches and sliced up some cantelope"  will forever make me smile.
2nd words like: pigwhack, cantelope, not pissed, happy in the face, Sierra say good bye to Big J he is one of the biggest humans you will meet.
3rd Big J will empty any and all your vodka bottles.
4th Big J is a world class butcher.  Hey enslow Big J even kept antelope hearts!

All and all we here as a family were very impressed with these two knuckleheads.  They did the dishes a couple times and kept everything clean.  They showered daily ect.  My wife said she would have them back anytime and Sierra still talks about Mathew.  Enslow she misses you and said it takes along time for you to come back.  Congrats guys on a hunt of a life time!!!!!! Now with any luck you won't draw again for a long long time
Dead animals don't need fur anyway!!!!!!!!!!

This seems to be a familiar theme with Big J. hehehe

He wasn't worth a damn the second day/night of the Jedi Bullhead Tourney either.

Nice job guys and great story!!

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

Ha ha, I can just hear Enslow with his "do it for mama" routine.  We went through a little Sandler out in the boat together this summer.  I am sure you and Big J hugged multiple times(maybe even got to 1st or second base).  I can only imagine what is not being shared.  That does sound like a hunt to remember.  Maybe someday I will hunt antelopes again.  Your stories make me happy in the face.
