Muskie fishing in ND

I am looking for lakes in ND where I can go muskie fishing. I looked at the stocking reports, but I noticed that most lakes that have been stocked are not lakes where I have seen people fishing for muskies. In particular, Devils Lake has muskies but I never see anyone fishing for them. Does anyone ever catch muskies on Devils Lake?

Also, it appears that only tiger muskies are stocked in ND, which means that these fish act more like pike and less like muskies. Has anyone found this to be true in their fishing experiences?

here is a post from Jul 11, 2007

The Mandan angler reeled in a 46-pound 8-ounce muskie at New Johns Lake, besting both the pure muskie (46 pounds) and tiger muskie (40 pounds) state records, according to Scott Gangl, fisheries management section leader for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. Genetic material is being sent to a lab to determine whether the fish is a tiger muskie, a cross between a northern pike and pure muskie.

New Johns Lake, part of the Garrison Diversion canal lakes, is located in northern Burleigh County. Both types of muskies have been stocked into the canal lakes.

Don't let the fact that you arn't seeing people fishing for them stop you from giving it a shot. Maybe its an untapped resourse at Devils Lake you could have all to yourself. Could be awsome muskie fishing there for all we know. Never know till you give it a shot.

Lake Tshida(at one time, not sure if they still stock it)
Devils Lake

Where are you from?

Sweetbriar lost a lot of nice fish, especially muskies, over the last few years of low water.

There are still some but nowhere near the numbers or size that used to be out there. Hopefully they will rebound back to where they were.

Back in 2005 I caught a 49" male pure muskie that weighed in, a few hours after I harvested it, on official weigh scale at 31.5 lbs.   It was awesome to see that fish fight for 20mins and come completely out of the water 3x like a swordfish in the ocean.

I mounted that fish because I doubt I'll ever repeat that catch again in my lifetime.  Otherwise, I would've tried a THIRD time to release it.  The first two attempts the fish went belly-up on me.  I couldn't get him to resuscitate and go back down.  So, into the live well he went.  I think it's #3 in line as far as length goes.  The original record was set in 2004 and then broken again in 2007.

Sorry for being so late on this thread - but the ND Game and Fish doesn't see musky as fish to manage in North Dakota.  I've asked them many times and the FM Musky Chapter out of Fargo is also trying.

For now, you have to fish Minnesota if you want QUALITY and Quantity musky fishing.
