Mr. Snake Master, can you tell me what snake this is? Sorry for the picture quality. He was hanging out on my boat in 20 FOW, on the stern of the boat. I tried to take a pic of him in the water but he was too fast once I realized it was NOT a nightcrawler..........

Northern redbelly snake. harmless to humans (unless your name is Tim)  only get about 15" long.  they come in 2 color variations tan (like that one) and dark gray to almost blue, with a bright red belly.  found in the eastern half of ND from around granville east and in the turtle mtns.  eats earthworms & small bugs.  most people aren't fortunate enough to ever see one in ND since they're so small & spend most of they're time under ground or under logs & boards.

My daughter caught this little guy by our garage.  I've only seen two in my life and she just snatches this one up like it's an everyday occurence.

I know its wierd & creepy but I enjoy snakes more than I do fishing I think.  Just one of those childhood fascinations I never grew out of.  I think part of it is the reaction snakes impose on people.  for some reason, love em or hate em, since the dawn of man, everyone is curious when it comes to snakes.

show up with a snake and one might say "gross! I hate snakes, get it away from me", but then they almost immediately say..."what kind is it" then "how big does it get"  "is it poisonous" follow by at least a dozen more questions.

since I was old enough to walk I have caught, collected, bred, raised, bought, sold, photographed, imported, and exported just about every specie of snake you can imagine.

I am not sure, but aren't the "racer" species in ND poisonous?

She's been taught which ones to grab and which ones to avoid.  If she can grab it...She's fearless.  Every garter snake she see's gets grabbed up and paraded around.  Along with frogs, toads, grasshoppers, crickets, turtles, and whatever else catches her eye.  I love it!!!
