Mud hunt of the year!

Just seeing if anyone else is brave enough to take on a few ducks and geese in this weather over the weekend?  Heading out with 6 guys and couple atv's to setup decoys in the morning.  Should be one to tell the kids about some day, over 3 inches rain so far and looks to continue.  Any advice on what not to do in these conditions, besides stay home?  Left the pump at home, so I hope the auto throws shells all day in the mud.  Hope to post a few pic.

Please do not tear up roads and farm fields!

Try to stay on blacktop or well maintained gravel roads only. Park the truck and atv's and walk your decoys into the fields.

Well said!

A little common sense and respect out there can go a long way.

The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

Not many things pi$$ off farmers more than guys ripping up muddy section lines just because they can.  I wouldn't drive into any cropland without permission even if it isn't posted,  because it probably will be posted the next time I  come by.

You can borrow my GMC so you don't swamp that ford.  ;)

I've gotta admit that tearing ruts into farmers fields really gets their dander up.  Tractors tend to bounce a lot when you hit wheel ruts.  Well, at least the older ones I drove did.  Could really shake a guy around on the old JD's.

Yeah, going to plow right past the old posted sign and setup my spread, the old ford will have no problems if not atv will make it to the top off the hill!  The field needs to be plowed any ways, just as well start the process.  Farmer is headed to the homecoming game I hope (he has an NDSU flag flying by the house and nice car is gone).  I am going to start hitting the stones so the first shells help clear the mind at 7am, field may not be the only thing plowed tomorrow.

All seriousness, I am hunting on private, posted land, the farmer is going to the ndsu game.  In fact I am going to steal his gator xuv in the morning after he leaves, and he will be out of keystone by 8pm tonight.  I just have the pleaser of calling him - dad.  (grin)

We plan on parking on the approach in the morning and humping the decoys in. Not too far though, probably only about 1/4 mile or so. If we can get out there. supposed to be freezing drizzle in the morning. Hopefully it's not too icy. Eh. Come hell or high water i'm going goose hunting!

I can't agree more, some good points with the winter wheat and no till.  It just reinforces the old, get to know the land owner relationships we need to build.  I figured  I would get some good responses.  Like I said, hunting on the family spread in the morning so no problems here.  Saw good numbers tonight, so looking forward to another good hunt.

Couldn't get geese any closer than 100 yards from our spread this morning. How friggin aggrevating. One mallard was all we had to show for our efforts. But it was a great time!

Definitely have to be careful out there.  Cultivated fields are a mess. We hunted a stubble field this morning that some family friends own.  After testing it, everything looked good.  We drove about 1/2 mile through it and didn't even sink in at all.  This field was higher up than the other fields around us though.  We ended up w/ 9 shooters taking 49 mallards/ pintails (9 were pins) and 6 canadas.  Good shoot.  Gotta love that in your face action.

We had the field picked out from early last week, but were hoping it hadn't been chisel plowed, figured we could drive in--it was, so we humped it in.  couldn't get as many decoys in as we wanted, but the shooting was still OK--had a young hunter with us, and everybody ended up with plenty of ducks, so all in all a good day.  got a little needed exercise as well.
