Mtn Lion concerns

I am new to North Dakota. I moved here late last winter. I am an avid sportsman who is extremely excited about my new home in North Dakota. I am originally a farm boy from Kentucky. I grew up hunting deer, quail, rabbits, and waterfowl. However, as long as I can remember, when I would hear stories or read about stories of Mtn. Lions attacking or stalking hunters, it gave me cold chills. So my entire life I have had this fear of big cats. My question is, how concerned should I be about encountering a big cat while hunting? Is there that many cats in North Dakota? Also, if I do encounter one, is it going to run from me or is it going to hunch down and get ready to strike? I have little knowledge on these animals. I have read a lot of stories on these North Dakota websites and have seen several pictures from across the state over the past several years of cats that have been harvested. I figured that as many cat sightings that people talk about on these forums that we would see more trail cam pics of them. This is not a post to portray anyone as I liar and I am still scared to death of them. With todays technology and trail cams, I just figured we would see more pics of them.

Once again this is not a post to put anyone down or call anyone a liar. I just wanted to ask the hunters themselves and gain a little more knowledge about these cats. Thanks for any info!

I wouldnt be worried about. in the last 100 years theres only been 14 people killed by mountian lions. You're more likely to get killed by a dog or struck by lightning.

My friend and I were mountain biking out near Devils Pass on the Maah Dah Hey trail around mile marker 55, and we heard one growl at us in the trees.  I think he was following us down the draw that we were in.  I fired my pistol a couple times to scare him off (all I had at the time was a 380, now I carry a 357).

Dont worry about the lions,  just hunt with a slow friend and youll be fine.  Im not sure why people dont get more trailcam pics. I think its because the lions are following them when they are putting the cameras up.....    ;)

Hunt with a slow fat guy,  buy him some biscuits and gravy for breakfast  and make sure he spills on himself,  slide some bacon in his pockets when he's not looking.   You,ll be able to get away easy.  : )

Seriously,  when in the badlands you shouldn't worry but you should be aware.  No where else will you come across one unless you're extremely lucky.

I'd be more worried about humans than mountain lions.

I was hiking on the Maah Dah Hey trail and I seen a couple guys on bikes coming down the trail so I hide in the bushes and when they come by I let out a little growl to scare them and the SOB's damn near shot me!

That's what I told my buddy.  I don't have to out run the mountain lion, I just have to out run you.

Most mt. lions are in the western part of the state, my guess is that not as many trial cameras in those parts due to lack of people and government land (park/grasslands).   My guess is if you ever get the rare chance to see one, it would turn and run.  In addition, if you are out in their areas, my guess is it will be when you are out with a gun hunting, so relax and take any shot you can get!

We have thousands of people that hunt for 4-6 months each year, yet only a handfull of cats get shot.  So relax and enjoy all North Dakota has to offer and welcome to Fishingbuddy.

I seen cat tracks this weekend.   The area that we seen them - had a lot of tracks.  If I didnt know anybetter I would think a family of them.   Didnt say anything to the kids until we were on our way back. Started in about it and they said they seen em.  My youngest did all the flanking etc and said he was checkin his back over and over.   The grass is high and to be real honest I didnt like being disarmed.  The question my kids had is why have such a population.  With the deer pop stabilizing or in some cases going down -- -you have hungry cats.

I personally see no reason to have a big cat pop -----negligence is what it is----  you have dogs for a reason ---- to hunt cats.   its nature a hell of lot more nature then letting cats kill a bunch of deer that hunters could shoot.   OPEN THE SEASON WIDE AND ALLOW DOGS FROM THE GET GO!!!!!

Thanks alot Shep.  I had a dream there was a mountain lion in my backyard.  I shot it, but it wouldn't die.  I went in the house to get some shotguns shells, but I couldn't find any.

shep,

In all honesty, I would call yourself lucky to see a cat.  Call me crazy but I want to see one of these fine critters in the wild in the worse way.  Of course, I don't REALLY want it to be via being stalked but I might accept it if it meant I got to see one AND have a chance at killing it.

Anyway, you don't have anything to worry about.  Can you find yourself in a bad predicament?  Well, the Lord works in mysterious ways.  But in reality, you have a much better chance of being hit by a car walking across the street or maybe even being struck by lightning (comparing North Dakota sightings to other areas of the country).

They are definitely out there but many (I know some landowners are not found of them and I wonder just how bad they are hitting the deer population myself) consider them a neat item on the landscape.

So enter with no worries and enjoy North Dakota.

One time I had a dream there was a grizzly bear inside the State Library at the Capitol.  I was shooting at it from outside the building.  It leapt on on the roof and then jumped down and pinned me to the ground.  Then I woke up.
