Mountain Lion Scrape

Photo Description:
We ran accross this near Haliday ND while bird hunting over the weekend.  It was on a rural road, the base of the pole had been scratched to bare dirt and then you could see how the lion raked the pole with it's claws.  I guess this is pretty common further into the badlands to see. Those marks go into the wood a solid quarter inch.

Wow.  Very ironic.  Am listing to a seminar on cats.  They just talked about scrapes.

Well....i would have to say being the rut is right around the corner that is more likely to be a rub and a scrape from a whitetail than a lion. Just my opinion tho?

If that's from a deer....it would have to be one hell of a deer!

The area of the state i hunt,  deer rub on telephone poles all the time. Or maybe there are just that many lions running around scratching on poles? (i live in the eastern part of the state)

If you blow the picture up and look at some of the scrapes, it appears some of  the splinters are at the top of the mark indicating an upward motion. I guess I have never seen a cat sit on the ground and scrape upwards.

Yeah I won't confirm that is a scrape for sure but cats do and often make scrapes.  They normally pile some dirt, urinate or defecate and leave their tracks.  If you don't see that around that pole I wouldn't be calling it a cat scrape.  Point is though, cats do make scrapes.  I imagine they like to run their claws too.  As the reserach I have been compiling says, a cat's a cat.  In otherwords, they do the same as a house cat or bobcat.

Yeah, i can add the other photo's.  I guess i can't believe a deer could do it and if it was, i want to see that bugger too.  I'm not saying it can't be a deer but the opinion we got from a badlands rancher was it was a cat.  Maybe it's a Saskwatch.

Parnellie,  Agreed - that would be best but i'm from the eastern portion of the state of ND and this was West.  I'll be back that way later in the year and i'll scout around with the snow on the ground and see if whatever it was left any decent sign.  Nice Cat pic posted by they way.
