Monster Crappie?

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the 17" long 5lb crappie caught in MN. Its suppose to be a state record. I was hoping someone might have heard something or even have a picture of it. That is if its true.

I heard that it was caught on Red lake last Sunday. They caught it with a sucker minnow on a tip up. They were trying for northerns.

Buck,

The state record black crappie is 5lbs but that has been on the books for sometime, further 17"s would tip the scale around 3lbs (give or take). My largest wall hanger is 16.10" and was 2.8lbs,Big thick slab from URL a few years back.

Before the big crappie boom on the URL back in 2001 I herd reports of 17",18"and even 19" black crappies never seen one tho and we fished hard to find one.:-( Never happened.Even the DNR reported monster crappies in test traps while checking the walleye stocking program back then, along with the walleyes there would be 3-4 crappies averaging 10lbs in total weight, those are some BIG crappies!

Curious, where did this rumor come from? The only thing happening here in MN is a major walleye bite on Mille Laces lake, its been a "heckofaseason" thus far.

The rumur is from one of my co-workers buddies who actually saw it. They are trying to keep it alive.

I just checked with Rogers Camp Ground on URL,nothing word wise spread their way, also called some friends at our DNR license office in St.Paul,nothing... And again, the current black crappie record is 5lbs already.Would cool to see another one tho...

Have your buddy get some pics!.

Nothing is impossible, however, every year now for the past 4-5 there has been a 5lb crappie rumor coming out of URL and it doesnt turn out true. I'm suprised there arent more 3-4lb fish showing up on a very occasional basis. I think they would if the lower lake was open to fishing, deeper water, more structure and less pressure.
