moa question

i dont have much experience shooting targets any further than 250 yards.  i was hoping to start shooting at things a little further out there.  last year antelope hunting there was a fairly nice buck and the with the open terrain in the area the closest i could get was about 550 yards.  anyways i would like to start shooting at distances so next time i could confidently make that shot if the conditions were right.  currently with my rifle / scope setup, a browning a-bolt in .300 win mag and nikon 3-9X scope i can shoot 1 inch groups consistently and sometimes down to about a 1/2 inch at 100 yards.  my question is could i realistically expect to shoot 5 inch groups at 500 yards or is the moa theory a little off.  also i have been looking at some different scopes that might help me out a little bit in the longer range department.  i haven't made my mind up yet, probably the most fun part about it, but i'm starting to look pretty hard at the leupold mark 4.  any thoughts or experience with any of this.

In theory a 1" group at 100  would equall a 5" group at 500 but there are so many factors involved the only way to really know if you can shoot that kind of group is to shoot at 500.

In theory 1 MOA = 1" at 100 yards, but it actually equals 1.047". Not a huge difference, but it can have an impact at longer ranges. I started getting into the long range shooting about 2 years ago, so if you would like to chat I would be glad to help you out. PM me if you like.

Your rifle and scope are probably capable.  Your ability to feed them consistent ammo and drive it all straight will make or break you.

I haven't and likely won't spend the extra $$ for a MK IV.  Pass me a Leupold 3.5-10x40 or 4.5-14x40 with an elevation turret please.

Shouldn't be a problem. If it is I would reccomend hand loading and definitely a new scope. Your right on with the mark4. I use a fixed 16x on my .308 with mild it's. Mia knobs 1/4moa. Love it and it's right on with ballistics apps for iPhone or whatever you might use.
LGK

i would not spend the extra $$$$ on a mk4, that is unless you get off on saying "its tactical". i called Leupold and and after badgering the tech i finally got him to tell me that it is a VX3 painted black and tested slightly harder.

you can have any vx3 sent to the leupy custom shop and have mills or the tmr reticle put in for around 100 i think and the turrets are about 80 each.

in a nutshell you can do the same thing for 400 less by going vx3 over a mk4

Can't swear to this but I believe they're tested @ 150ft/# of recoil instead of 100.  That's not worth the $$ to me because I don't have anything that even comes close to 100ft/# of recoil, in fact I doubt I have anything that's even 50#.

 If your interested I have a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14X-40 one inch tube, TMR reticle and a M1 elevation knob.  I haven't had it very long, as new - no marks that I can find.  I'm selling it as I replaced it with a Leupold of higher power and ffp.  Price $750

"likely" your biggest accuracy gains are going to come from being a better shooter vs. upgrades to the weapon/optics/ammo

not saying you  aren't an awesome shot; but typically the most impactful variable is the person operating the weapon and not the weapon itself

my recommendation;
start shooting longer ranges on paper with what you have; if/when you encounter a plateau evaluate "your" elements of the shooting solution vs. starting with the equipment elements

550 is a hike; on big game achieving that level of profiecency (sp) isn't common

Keep in mind the lighter the setup and heavier the trigger the easier it is to pull off target.  The more you contact the rifle the more human error will be present.  Kind of why 1.5oz triggers are used and free recoil shooting for the ones after the tightest groups.
