Now that Mn has delisted the gray wolf, sounds like a hunting and trapping season is in order, from what I've read we have a 3000strong wolf population here, highest in the lower 48,the state working with the usfw would like to trim it  back to 1600.More to come.

In all seriousness I hope MN is able to put together a workable scenario for hunters to manage wolf poplulations.

If there are an estimated population of 3K now and the management goal is 1600, I would hope that it's full-steam ahead until at least 1400 are registered killed.  Average pup recruitment should also be factored into the mix.

I'd love to see something like ND allows with cats where the season opens when folks begin to go afield and ends about the time the hides are roughed up and pups start to arrive.

I've also read that the wolf population is pretty strong in northern wisc,so much so that the black bear hunters no longer use dogs to hunt bears, the dogs end up a easy meal for the wolf pack.

The hickup here is now that the delisting has been instated, our red lake band of ojibwe claimed their rez 20,000acres will be a refuge for the wolves in north central Mn,won't take long for the wolves to figure out the boundary lines, kinda like geese around refuges.

Snow- Really!?! nothing survives that rez... I went to school in Bemidji and my wife is from International Falls so i know the area fairly well. They don't seem to really care about wildlife up there e.g. the red lake fishery (netting spawning walleyes) but thats a different story

It doesnt take wolves long to figure things out.  Heck we can't even fill our quota here in MT now. 1400 wolves in your thick woodlands would be a tuff thing to fill.  It sure would be fun to try.  has anyone hunted wolves???  I've been going a bit and I'm thinking about calling???  howling or rabbit calls?  hope to cutt a fresh track and walk one down in the next month or two we just need some fresh snow.

Never hunted them but I would follow the elk herds. Hound them enough and you might even get the wolves to associate "elk" wih "danger"...well...probably not. Its a nice idea though.

It would be cool to see a season organized. I have never seen a live wolf though.
If everyone focused on the important things in life the world would have a shortage of fishing poles.

feasant,

Yup,I here ya,in my younger years I drove through the rez from bemidji north many times heading to roseau, through the lower red lake area of the rez, they hunted deer at night off pickups with plateforms, shot on rafts of bills out in the lake with a stiff north wind from the south shore, waited for the dead ducks to float to shore, crazy stuff went on up there, but yeah, the tribal elders made it known the wolves would have a snactuary once they are delisted...

i would probably give up a season of deer hunting if i got a wolf tag...i have seen 5 in real life in the wild and i want one. i know people shoot them all the time but just let them lay because they are out of control up north. if i got a tag i would live in the boundry waters for weeks just to shoot one.  the ones ive seen are around the leech lake area more so by akeley. i cant wait...lets get this season started already.

the title of this thread gave me WOOD!!!!!!!!!.
I will be like a Walmart shooper on black thursday to get the first tag. the rez is already short on deer due to hunting practices.  wolves will find no sanctuary there or perhaps for a bit till they run ouua foood.
i will for- go bow/fishing/coyotes to persue them things.
funny how the D.N.R. knows how many wolves are in the starte but doe'snt have a clue as to how many deer??

Always heard that there are not that many in the BWCA still to many people around... I have never heard any at night up there. So I would agree with this

Baiting would be the best bet. Just find a fresh road kill, and drag it out into the woods making sure you cross a couple trails they use. Leave it lay and get up in a tree stand far enough away they won't sense you being there.

If you really want to get the wolf population down, try to take out the Alpha female. She is the puppy machine for the pack.
