Missouri River (ND Lower Portion) - Monday, February 6, 2012 | |
Fished on a backwater area south of the Marina (not sure what it is called). Ice conditions close to shore were NOT ideal. Mushy ice, only about 4-6 inches thick. Once you got past that, there is about a foot of good solid ice. Caught 2 nice pike, missed at least two more. Also caught a decent walleye and small perch. Dead sticks with minnows yeided nothing. All fish/bites on jigging a swedish pimple with a minnow head.

Figured I better post a report after Snake17 called us all out. Kinda hurt my feeling so here goes. Went down to the mouth of the Little Heart, was gonna pop some holes. Took the ice prod and a throw pillow just in case, Glad I did. The ice looks like it is thick but not in real good condition. A couple smacks with the ice prod and it went through. 2 inches of crappy ice. Good thing I didn't go trapsing out there.

Fished from 12:30 to 4pm on Sunday. Caught about a 5lb northern from the boat ramp and one cisco from the rocks on the west side. Not a whole lot of activitiy going on in either spot. Guys in boats said they were picking up few walleyes. I was pitching jigs with minnows or fresh smelt when available. Also tried a a 4in smelt looking crank. No luck at all. Cisco are traveling in schools cruising the shoreline by the rocks. Anyone know if those things are any good smoked? I always seem to be up at the tailrace on the wrong day. Is it me? Also, does anyone know if a guy can catch salmon this time of year in that area? Or all they schooled up really deep?

Dunked the boat at Merriwethers in Bismarck on 1/5/12. Pretty much stayed in town and fished between the bridges. Found the walleyes to be scattered, caught 4 with only one keeper. Northerns were aplenty if you went into the right spots with jigs and minnows, caught a 2 man limit of 3-8 lb fish and a gar. Good times for January!

Fished MacLean Bottoms from shore near the ramp. Nothing; guy next to me got one tug on a minnow he was letting swim. Folks in boats were getting decent fish.
Also have fished Heskett Station by Mandan in recent weeks, got skunked there too, pulling cranks. So a question: Is it even worth it to try shore fishing this time of year, or do the walleye go so deep in their holes one needs a boat to reach them? |
