Im looking for real world #s for a few vehicles.  I tow a Champ 194 Fishhunter (heavy heavy boat with tandem trailer).

2010 Ford F150 5.4 and 6spd
2010 GM 1500 with 6.2 and MDS and 6 speed (would consider the 5.3)
2010 Dodge with 5.7 and MDS

All will be crew cab 4x4.  Prefer 3.73s, but I know some come with 3.42s?..

Loaded and unlaoded would help.  Lots of miles a summer chasing Eyes and looking to save a $ or 2.  My current 5-9 MPG towing and truck with 145k is wearing me out.

Ive always been partial to Fords, but the 5.4 isnt known as a mileage truck.  I have heard great reviews about the 6.2 with the  speed, but dont lkike the buyout issue and have had BAD luck with GM in the past.  Dodge scares the crap out of me, but Ive heard things have improved...  the 5.7 is a beast, but milage in an 08 pulling my boat is crap (buddies truck), but changes have been made since then.

I know, I know.....  We dont buy trucks for milage.  Or Id pull my boat with a Prius if it were able.  Im not buying just for these facts, but liked to be well informed from real life users, not Car and Driver and such.

Thanks in advance.

I don't tow anything, but I do keep very detailed records of my F150 Supercrew.  Here are some specifics (note, this covers the last 18 months of owning my F150. I have the 5.4 engine)

Vehicle: 2004 Ford F150 Supercrew 5.4L with (97,000+ miles on the odometer)
Total Gallons used: 743.389
Total Mileage driven: 8,006.60
Overall Miles Per Gallon: 10.77

I have filled my tank 37 times with an average of 20.09 gallons added per fill-up. I drive an average of 216.39 miles and go an average of 14.35 days between fill-ups. I primarily drive my truck in town (Fargo, ND)

I hope this info helps you out. I really love my F150, I got a lot of truck for my money compared to other competitors.

Wasnt aware of a Ford buyout issue. You mean GM? I'd wait and checkout the new 6.2 but thats just me. A supposed 20% better fuel milage and a way better ride than dodge.

Yes, I meant GM buyout.  Ford had forethought and made changes to weather the storm without help.

I did look at a 1 ton with the 6.2.  I just havent heard much about the Ford 6.2 stats.  Im REALLY leaning Ford.  Prices seem at least 3k lower for comparably equipped GMC...  Decisions, decisions.  I may just stick with what I have, but I hate it.

2010 Ford F150 5.4, 6spd, 3.55, Crew Cab, 6.5' Box

Just purchased mine almost a month ago.  I had 200 miles on it when I took it on a 1400 mile trip.  I had about 500lbs in the box. At the end of the first 700 miles comp said AVE of 18.8 mpg.  Hand calculated it to 18.1 mpg.  On the return trip the comp said AVE 18.4mpg.  Calculated to 18.0 mpg.

Driving was all highway through Iowa, MN, and ND.  Set cruise at 75 in IA and MN, and 80 in ND.

The truck now has about 2400 miles and the computer is giving me a consistent 18.1 to 18.2 readout.  Thats about 85% highway, 15% city.

All 87 oct fuel.

I havent had a chance to pull anything with it.

09 Silverado gets low 13's pulling an 18ft Lund boat with the 5.3L motor. Ford's starting in 2009 are getting pretty good mileage as well.

FYI, Once GM files IPO that should basically get the govt. totally out of partial ownership. Don't like it either but both GM and Chrysler had to to stay afloat. GM still makes a dang good pickup, LTZ Chevy's and GMC's hang right there with the Ford's. All of the big 3 really do have nice pickups out right now. Just comes down to personal preference.

I just bought an 07 mega cab and been getting 16 on highway and about 14 in town.  Havnt had a chance to pull the boat yet so we'll see. Hopefully it will be better than the v10 i had before. I just dont like the idea of a 5.4 being able to pull any thing.  heard a lot of good about the chevy 6.0's but I prefer dodge wanted the big cab.  Toyota does well also I almost bought a tundra crew max but didnt want the small box.

My '05 F150 5.4 with the 4 speed pullin an 18ft Lund will get anywhere from 10-16mpg depending on the wind how hard I drive ect. I even pull a 29ft enclosed snowmobile trailer with it. My grandpa's '09 f150 with the 5.4 and 6 speed tranny pulling the same boat will get 1 or 2mpg better than mine. Ive towed up to 15,000lbs with my F150 with no issues. Hook your boat up to each of them and take them for a test drive and see which one you like better.

 2010 F-150 SCREW 5.5' box, 3.73, 6 speed, 5.4L

Average over all tanks has been about 18 consistently with combined driving. Interstate speeds 75-80 will get me about 17-18, city driving is the same, and I can jump into the low 20's on the highway at speeds of 55-65.

Towing at highway speeds got me about 17  pulling 20' aluminum boat, interstate would be closer to 15 if I remember correctly.

my ford with 5.4 in it should never be mentioned in the same sentence with getting good gas mileage.  It is a hog.  last weekend I got 6.8 pulling a 20 foot enclosed car hauler.  I get 13-14 on the highway driving it like an old lady.

i have a 2010 hemi ram and am a chevy guy normally. I got 19 hand calculated to the cities at 7 over on cruise with a full bed maybe 50 lbs as well as 5 people. hope that helps. My honest opinion is that if you are hauling, get a truck that can haul your trailer and last. MPG over 7 years is not whats important. Its all about having the right tool for the job

I have an 09 Dodge 1/2 ton, I have owned it roughly 1 yr now.  It has 20K on the odometer and check the mileage every oil change at roughly a 16 average in the winter and a 19 spring summer and fall. Idling kills mpg.  But this mileage consists of highway cruising, and country driving spotting game.  Havnt towed alot but seems to be in the 11 -12 range at 65 when fairly calm.  Was a chevy guy untill this pickup.  Also though i have 3:55 gears.  Best trip was to central Illinois drove through Minnesota down and back got in the high 20's round trip, in early October.

I recently bought a 2010 F150 Supercrew and get about 18-19 MPG/HWY with no load and about 11-12 MPG pulling my boat.  In town during the week I seem to be getting about 12-13 MPG.

This is just about the same I was getting with my 2004 Ford Explorer, so needless to say I am very happy with the truck given it has a couple extra cylinders and a crap-load more power.

It also has the Ford SYNC system...which is really, really cool.

Luv,how much do ya pull? the 6.2 in the 1/2ton is a rocket (403HP) THIS IS A HIGH OUT PUT engine, the few guys I know that have'em average between 12-14mpg,same with the 6.0lit (322HP) this engine is a stump puller in the HD's and 1 ton's 12-14mpg's with active fuel management and the 6spd tranny. The new 2011 HD and 1 ton's have beefed up chassis this year, add another 1000lbs to the GVW,also a completely redesigned front end.

But if you only pull the USS Nimitz a few months a summer the 5.3lit will get you alot better milage running empty or hauling lite loads, don't be afraid of this powertrain either, its backed by a 5 year 100k/warrenty.

I love my 6.2 liter GMC.  The damn thing screams, 403 hp and pulls hard, 417 ft. lbs. torque.  With mixed driving I get about 14.5 mpg.  On a recent trip from Louisiana to ND I got as high as 19.2 mpg and averaged 17.8 mpg on the entire 1,450 mile trip with an average speed of 75mph.  I dont remember what the gear ratio is, but its at 80mph it purrs at 2k rpm.  Be warned though, the 6.2 liter requires 91 octane, but its a small price to pay for this awesome engine.

snow,

I have a Champ Fishhunter (heavy...225, kicker, 52 gal fuel, overstuffed with gear).  So pretty much average for glass multispecies boats.

The issue is my current rig is junk, and struggles with the boat.  My issue is my lifestyle.  Living 175 miles from my second job (guiding and tourneys), I am interested in the 3-6 mpg improvement I MAY get with a certain setup.   I have friends with the older GM 6.0, and am not impressed with the #s I have witnessed.  I also do not need a 3/4 ton.  1/2 will be just fine.  Just looking at real #s with a 1/2 ton set up for my lifestyle.  I often have the oportunity to leave the boat at the lake, and am not hooked up to a trailer 14 months out of the year so unloaded #s are also of significant importance.  The 5.3 would be most likely OK, but if the 6.2 is really getting such awesome #s unlaoded with the beast-like towing ability......  I have to say the Ford base $ seems to be kicking the other companies right now.  Toyotas with the 5.7 has definately caught my eye, but the fuel #s and initial $$ just dont jive especially when the quality doesnt seem that different than the big 3 with the improvements they have made recently.

As I mentioned, I know Im not looking at a Prius or Aveo...... But over the long haul 14 leaded can save a bit of coin vs 10 (and certainly better than what Im currently getting).  I appreciate all of your guys input.  Keep the #s coming....  Now to work on the other 1/4!!

YES, I am that foolish!

I am really surprized  the Toyota drivers aren't telling us what they are getting for MPG. Pulling the big boats and rvs.
